WORCESTER – Wesleyan benefitted from a WPI own goal in a 1-0 decision in a men's soccer matchup Thursday night in Alumni Stadium.
The sequence began with Adam Cowie-Haskell connecting with Chris Livingstone at the top corner of the six yard box. Livingstone then one-touched the feed that, in a best case scenario, was going to carom off the post and away from the goal or, in the worst case, roll barely wide until it was knocked in by the defender early in the ninth minute.
Despite a number of chances that kept the crowd on the edge of their seats, WPI senior goalkeeper Connor Hoeckele (Granby, CT) was only tested two more times in the contest while his counterpart, senior Brian Harnett (Montclair, NJ) stopped five. Wesleyan was also credited with a team save.
The hosts appeared to have evened up the match in the 72nd minute but graduate student Nate Peterson's (Mashpee, MA) bid was waved off due to a foul. Peterson and sophomore Brandon Hima (Watertown, CT) each had a pair of shots on-goal on the night.
After the 90 minutes of action, WPI doubled up the Cardinals 12-6 in shots and was awarded three of the five corner kicks.
The Engineers (2-1) travel to Mass. Maritime for a 1pm contest while Wesleyan (1-0) hosts Swarthmore at 6pm on Saturday.
