Cambridge, MA --- Sophomore Paul Beatty's (Halifax, MA) goal in the 67th minute was the game-winner in a 2-1 WPI victory over host MIT in a NEWMAC Men's Soccer showdown Saturday in Steinbrenner Stadium.
WPI, who last defeated MIT in 2011 at home and 2009 on the road, ups its record to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in league action. MIT, meanwhile, moves to 3-2-2 and 1-1-0. The series is now one-game margin (36-35-3) in Cambridge's Engineers favor.
Junior Spencer Ralphs (Simsbury, CT) scored his second of the season at 22:05 as he went one-on-one with the keeper and buried the ball into the bottom 90. Shortly after the break, junior Logan McLaughlin (Park City, UT) evened it up by heading in a corner kick taken by freshman Carlos Hernandez (Weston, FL) in the 54th minute. Senior Reese Petersen (Springfield, NJ) then assisted on Beatty's goal from the left side.
Senior Connor Hoeckele (Granby, CT) stopped four shots while sophomore Jeremy Cowham (Quincy, MA) totaled six saves for the hosts.
The Boynton Hillers took 14 of the 22 shots and eight of the 13 on-goal to go with eight of the 12 corner kicks in the contest.
WPI travels to Endicott Tuesday for a 7pm contest and MIT hosts Suffolk Wednesday, also at 7pm.
