Kissimmee, FL --- No. 11 WPI wrapped up its 10-game spring break trip with a 9-1 setback to No. 15 Coe and a 3-0 loss to St. Joseph's (ME) in softball action Friday at the Citrus Games.
The Engineers conclude a tough slate, including a trio of games against top 25 teams, with a 5-5 ledger. They begin their New England schedule Tuesday, March 21 with a 3:30pm home doubleheader versus Fitchburg State.
The first game of the day saw zeroes on the scoreboard until Coe put up a pair in the top of the fourth. WPI plated its only run in the bottom of the frame courtesy of a double steal. The Kohawks continued to score with three in the fifth and seventh to go with one in the sixth.
Junior Nina Murphy-Cook (Roseville, CA) accounted for two of the Engineers six hits along with a stolen base and a solo double play. Freshman Mackenzie Phillips (Gill, MA) struck out five in the start.
The Monks collected three runs on four hits in the first two innings of the second game. Junior Kelsey Saucier (Worcester, MA) then recorded four of her seven strikeouts as she and her defense went on to allow only one more hit the rest of the way. Classmate Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) connected on half of the Crimson and Gray hits. Murphy-Cook walked and stole a base.
