Tim Petri and Jack Bauer Shine in Men’s Swimming & Diving Split with MIT and Bowdoin

WORCESTER – Senior Tim Petri (Eksjö, Sweden) and sophomore Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI) each won an individual event as No. 25 WPI men's swimming & diving team split with No. 4 MIT and Bowdoin Saturday at the Sports & Recreation Center. The Engineers, who entered the day with a 24-0 record in the Sports & Recreation Center, defeated the Polar Bears 184-116 and were upended by MIT 229.50-70.50.

Petri won the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 58.93 while Bauer took the 100-yard butterfly (50.86). The duo was also second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:09.81) and 100-yard backstroke (52.04), respectively. The foursome of Bauer, Petri, senior Seth MacDonald (Sherrill, NY) and sophomore Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI) collaborated for a third place finish in the 200-yard medley relay (1:35.63) as did the quartet of Bauer, senior Frederick Burgwardt (Mendon, NY), senior Andrew Kelleher (Poughquag, NY) and senior Andrew Bauer (Cumberland, RI) in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:27.17).

Andrew Bauer collected bronze in the 50-yard (21.81), 100-yard (47.51) and 200-yard freestyles (1:43.16). Senior Matt Houghton (Berkley, MA) also finished third as he clocked a 1:58.91 in the 200-yard backstroke.

Sophomore Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA) was fourth in the 100-yard IM (54.43) while senior Matt Suarez (Needham, MA) and junior Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA) were fourth and fifth in the 3-meter and 1-meter dive, respectively. Sophomore Roberto Esquivel (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) touched the wall fourth in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:27.72) and fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:03.27). MacDonald ended up sixth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.47).

The team hosts the three-day Gompei Invitational beginning Friday December 2nd.
