Gallant, Bauer and 400 Medley Relay Key Second Day of Swim/Dive’s Gompei Invite

WORCESTER – Juniors Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA) and Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI) each claimed a victory, as did the men's 400-yard medley relay, as Swimming & Diving continues to lead the three-day combined scoring Gompei Invitational.

WPI (3,528) enjoys a slight edge over Rowan (3,501.5). Division I Bryant sits third with 3,060.5. Full team standings below.

Gallant, who was victorious last night in the 200-yard IM, secured the 400-yard version of the event with a time of 4:09.81. Bauer enjoyed his first individual triumph of the weekend with a 49.92 in the 100-yard backstroke. In the final heat of the night Bauer, sophomore Dave Chen (Niantic, CT), junior Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI) and graduate student Erick Burgwardt (Honeoye Falls, NY) captured the 400-yard medley relay in just 3:23.47. Earlier in the evening Perry, senior Karim Elsayed (Cairo, Egypt), Bauer and Burgwardt collaborated for a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The 400-yard medley relay consisting of freshman Aaron McCutcheon (Smithfield, RI), Gallant, Elsayed and senior Craig Barrett (Edinburgh, Scotland) handed in an eighth-place time of 3:32.42.

The 400-yard IM also saw junior Roberto Esquivel (Tegucigalpa, Honduras), senior Sam Carley (Trumbull, CT) and senior Trevor Gehring (Wildwood Crest, NJ) place 14th (4:22.00), 15th (4:27.01) and 16th (4:27.70) in the B final and sophomore Joshua Driscoll (Haverhill, MA) win the C final in a time of 4:20.56. Perry followed Bauer in the 100 back with a 10th-place 54.22. McCutcheon and sophomore Jehu De la Rosa (The Woodlands, TX) finished 12th (54.16) and 17th (55.35), respectively.

Perry was the runner up, and first of six Engineers, in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 22.89. Elsayed was fourth (23.22) and Burgwardt was seventh (23.45). Freshman Tucker Besch (West Sand Lake, NY) was the runner up in the B final (23.85) while Chen was 20th (24.57) and senior Chris Massar (Monroe, CT) was 25th (25.35). Chen earned bronze (57.41) in the 100-yard breaststroke followed by Gallant in fifth (59.36). The B final included freshman Zach Denbow (Hooksett, NH) in 13th (1:00.43) and classmate Eric Scholz (Fulton, MD) in 15th (1:01.36). Freshman Emmett McCann (Seattle, WA) and sophomore Harry Saperstein (Simsbury, CT) placed 27-28 for the Engineers with times of 1:04.33 and 1:04.40.

Freshman Audrey Berner (San Jose, CA) once again had the best placing for the women with a third-place personal-best 26.66 in the 50-yard butterfly. Senior Jenny Day (Chelmsford, MA) took ninth (27.75) as sophomore Sofie de Oliveira (Portland, ME) was 14th (27.81) and freshman Elena Raden (Hockessin, DE) was 23rd (28.80). Berner, de Oliveira, sophomore Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY) and Day teamed up to take fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:39.12.

The Engineers had a sophomore finalist in each hear of the 50-yard backstroke. Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA) posted a 28.39 to finish fifth as Olivia Hanson (Anchorage, AK) ended up 14th (29.30) and Jordan Myers (Hampton, NH) picked up a pair of points with a 29th-place 31.86.

Hanson, senior Allysa Grant (Framingham, MA), sophomore Jillian Clemente (Killingworth, CT) and Morgan bested the A lineup and finished 12th (4:06.36) in the 400-yard medley relay. Grant headlined the Boynton Hillers entries in the 200-yard breaststroke with a 13th place 1:09.68. Sophomore Emma Edwardson (Cary, NC) and freshman Mary Rego (Amherst, NH) added 15th (1:10.63) and 20th-place (1:11.91) performances. The C final included freshman Theresa Sandbrook (Davie, FL), freshman Molly Silsby (Augusta, ME) and junior Stephanie Marcucci (Dingmans Ferry, PA) in 25th (1:12.36), 28th (1:12.83) and 30th (1:13.79).

Edwardson completed the 400-yard IM 17th (4:49.18), three spots behind Hanson with a time of 4:47.47. Clemente posted a 14th-place 1:57.39 and sophomore Anna Matsco (Windham, NH) registered a 26th-plce 2:01.21 in the 200-yard freestyle. Seo took 15th (1:00.62) and Morgan was 26th (1:02.40) in the 100-yard backstroke.

Sophomore Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA) led the Crimson and Gray contingent in the 200-yard freestyle with the best time in the B final (1:44.37). Freshman Tim McDonald (Walpole, MA) was 14th (1:45.92), freshman Matt Shriner (Arlington, MA) was 15th (1:46.04) and Barrett was 20th (1:55.37). Junior Jean Philippe Miralda (Tegucigalpa, Honduras), Esquivel and sophomore Matthew Scherrer (Wellesley, MA) all picked up valuable points in the C final with times of 1:47.53 (24th), 1:48.77 (27th) and 1:50.27 (29th). The 50-yard backstroke saw freshman Connor Bourgeois (Franklin, MA) and junior Hendrick Suwirjo (Derry, NH) place 14th (27.73) and 16th (27.98).

Down the road at Clark, senior Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA) landed fourth (404.95) and sophomore Chris Nelson (Millbury, MA) came home eighth (331.55) on the 3-meter diving board. Senior Hayley Poskus (Middleboro, MA) took fifth in the women's 1-meter dive with a score of 338.15.

The final day of competition includes the 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 500-yard freestyle, 100-yard IM, 50-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly and 400-yard freestyle relay. Trials begin at 9:30, finals get underway at 5:00 and synchronized diving is set for 2:00. All Sunday events will be held in the Sports & Recreation Center.
