Bauer’s B Cut Sets Record as Swimming & Diving Finishes Second at Gompei Invite

WORCESTER – Junior Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI) set a school record and achieved his second individual win and B cut of the weekend as the WPI swimming & diving team finished second at its own three-day combined-scoring Gompei Invitational that concluded on Sunday night.

Trailing by 26.5 points entering Sunday, Rowan took the lead after the first event of the evening and never looked back. The Profs went on to accumulate 4,920 points to edge out WPI (4,858) and Division I Bryant (4,572.5). Stevens Institute of Technology followed with 4,003 and Division II Bentley rounded out the top five with 2,915. Division II Assumption, a women's-only entry, took sixth (2,778) while Roger Williams was seventh (2,518.5), Brandeis was eighth (1,753), Division II Southern Connecticut was ninth (1,725) and Division II Saint Rose was 10th (1,012.5). Division II Merrimack, Babson and Clark completed the 13 team field.

Bauer, who claimed the 100-yard backstroke with a B cut time Saturday, secured the 200-yard backstroke with a B cut and school record 1:49.43. On Friday, Bauer teamed with sophomore Dave Chen (Niantic, CT), junior Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI), and graduate student Erick Burgwardt (Honeoye Falls, NY) to hand in a B cut in the 200-yard medley relay. Junior Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA) was third (1:54.40) as sophomore Jehu De la Rosa (The Woodlands, TX) and freshman Aaron McCutcheon (Smithfield, RI) were 9-10 with times of 1:57.45 and 2:01.28 in the 200 back A final and sophomore Joshua Driscoll (Haverhill, MA) represented the Engineers with a 15th-place 1:59.00 in the B final.

Perry, senior Karim Elsayed (Cairo, Egypt), Burgwardt and Bauer closed out the weekend with a second-place 3:05.62 in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Elsayed also took third in the 100-yard freestyle (46.44). Burgardt earned bronze in the 100-yard IM with a time of 53.44, just 0.40 ahead of fifth-place Chen. Senior Chris Massar (Monroe, CT) added a 23rd-place finish with a 58.74. Sophomore Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA) placed third in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:42.44 and freshman Matt Shriner (Arlington, MA) followed in fifth (4:46.08) and junior Roberto Esquivel (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) ended up 28th (5:04.42).

The women's 100-yard freestyle saw freshman Audrey Berner (San Jose, CA) finish fourth (53.60) while senior Emily Matsco (Windham, NH) and sophomore Anna Matsco (Windham, NH) ended up 25th (55.69) and 30th (56.78), respectively. Six Engineers earned points in the 200-yard butterfly. Senior Jenny Day (Chelmsford, MA) claimed foruth (2:09.92) and sophomore Jillian Clemente (Killingworth, CT) touched the wall fifth (2:10.80). The C final saw Anna Matsco, senior Kaitlin Travers (Northampton, MA), freshman Annie Hughes (Woodbury, NJ) and freshman Elena Raden (Hockessin, DE) occupy 22nd (2:15.14), 23rd (2:16.79), 28th (2:21.30) and 29th (2:21.89) place.

Day was fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:11.19) as sophomore Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) was 17th (5:23.16), Emily Matsco was 26th (5:30.37) and freshman Daire Daly (Sharon, MA) was 29th (5:34.28). Senior Allysa Grant (Framingham, MA) chipped in with a fith-place 1:03.32 in the 100-yard IM. Sophomore Bri Owen (Harleysville, PA) won the B final in 1:04.40 and was followed by junior Kelly Martin (Penfield, NY) in 14th (1:04.62). Junior Caroline Flynn (Norwell, MA) picked up points with a 24th-place 1:06.42.

Shriner led five men in the 200-yard butterfly with a fifth-place 1:55.44. Zimmermann was 20th (2:02.09) while sophomore Michael McCarthy (Long Beach, NY) touched the wall first in the C final (2:01.07). Driscoll and senior Trevor Gehring (Wildwood Crest, NJ) came home 24th (2:03.60) and 28th (2:04.81). Freshmen Zach Denbow (Hooksett, NH) and freshman Eric Scholz (Fulton, MD) posted sixth and eighth-place times of 27.81 and 28.32 in the 50-yard breaststroke.

The foursome of Berner, sophomore Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY), sophomore Sofie de Oliveira (Portland, ME) and Clemente delivered an eighth-place time of 3:38.76 in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Sophomore Emma Edwardson (Cary, NC) and freshman Molly Silsby (Augusta, ME) were ninth (32.45) and 16th (33.44) in the 50-yard breaststroke. Seo was 17th in the 200-yard backstroke as sophomore Olivia Hanson (Anchorage, AK) was 24th (2:14.37), Morgan was 28th (2:14.95) and junior Jenna Vandervort (Voorheesville, NY) was 30th (2:15.82).

With the normal diving events completed, Sunday featured synchronized diving between the swimming sessions. Sophomore Chris Nelson (Millbury, MA) and senior Ryan Coran (Potomac, MD) placed fourth while freshmen Deanna Kay (Tyngsboro, MA) and Julia Noel (Beverly, MA) took ninth. Seniors Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA) and Hayley Poskus (Middleboro, MA) ended up 11th, and sophomores Alexis Mittelman (Montgomery, NY) and Leigh Whitehorn (Madison, NJ) followed in 12th.

The Engineers close out the 2017 portion of the schedule with a challenging set of duals versus host Wesleyan, Tufts and Williams Saturday at 1pm.
