4x400m Relay Shines as Men’s Track & Field Places Fourth at Silfen Invite

New London, CT --- The 4x400-meter relay delivered a victory as the WPI men's track & field team amassed a plethora of season and personal bests in a fourth-place effort at the two-day Silfen Invitational. Friday featured the Elite Distance portion of the event comprised of the fastest seeded heats of the steeplechase, 800m, 1,500m, 5,000m and 10,000m.

Regional No. 3 Tufts earned he team title with 129 points followed by Division II East No. 1 Stonehill (110.5) and regional No. 9 Coast Guard (88). The Engineers, ranked sixth in the region, was next with 80 points. Division II East No. 6 Franklin Pierce shored up the top 5 with 73 points. East No. 10 New Haven was 10th (31) and East No. 9 Bentley was 15th (14).

Sophomore Alex Rus (Newton, MA), senior Paul-Henry Schoenhagen (Cleveland Heights, OH), sophomore Nick Fleury (Hopkinton, NH) and senior Warren Staver (Centreville, MD) collaborated to post a season- and NEWMAC-best time of 3:18.56. It is also the seventh-ranked time on the Division III performance list.

Earlier in the day, Rus was third (49.54) and Schoenhagen was fourth (49.58) while freshman Ben Steeves (Hollis, ME) was eighth (50.93) in the 400-meter dash. All three times were season bests. Steeves and Staver, meanwhile, were 12th and 13th with Division III New England qualifying times of 1:56.55 and 1:56.62 in the 800-meter run.

Senior Brandon Hoghaug (Douglas, MA) earned silver in the high jump (6-4) and was followed by sophomore Garth Hull (Arlington, MA) in seventh with a clearance of six feet. Senior Aaron Weeks (Pittsfield, MA) tossed the javelin 176-10 to take second while junior Evan Bossio (Pittsfield, MA) recorded an eighth-place 158-9.

Freshman Oliver Thomas (Goffstown, NH), sophomore Fabian Gaziano (Wilbraham, MA), freshman Mark Bray (Shrewsbury, MA) and sophomore Quinton Schimmel (Monroe Township, NJ) each raced to a personal best time in the 110-meter hurdles. Thomas and Faziano were third (15.37) and fourth (15.54) as Bray was ninth (16.07) and Schimmel was 13th (16.34).

Senior Jack DeVine (Wilbraham, MA) leaped to a third-place 21-0.75 and sophomore Matt Jankowski (Burlington, MA) was fourth in the shot put with a distance of 43-7.25. Freshman Johann Bradley (Slidell, LA) cleared 13-11.25 for sixth in the pole vault.

The steeplechase saw senior Tristam Winship (Bedford, NH) and sophomore Jake Scarponi (Barrington, NH) PR in sixth (9:54.59) and ninth (10:16.18), respectively. Schimmel was sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best 57.68 and Gaziano was eighth (58.48).

Senior Patrick Wang (Beijing, China) achieved a career-best 123-9 in the discus and junior Michael Brady (Medway, MA) clocked a season-best 15:21.11 in the 5,000-meter run.

The Engineers head to Williamstown Saturday for a meet with Williams and Middlebury.
