Two Records Fall as Track & Field Programs Compete at All-New England Championships

Dartmouth, NH --- The men's 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays and seven individuals, including sophomore Sydney Packard (Georgetown, MA), finished in the top eight to earn All-New England honors as the WPI track & field programs competed at the All-New England Championships Friday and Saturday at Dartmouth. The relay set a school record with a runner-up time and Packard reset the women's 800-meter run standard as the teams placed seventh and 33rd, respectively.

The men totaled 39.5 points as Southern Connecticut State University secured the team crown and Northeastern won the women's title.

Sophomore Nick Fleury (Hopkinton, NH), junior Antoine Harris (Southington, CT), sophomore Alex Rus (Newton, MA) and sophomore William Kopellas (Needham, MA) collaborated to hand in a second-place time of 41.82 in the relay while Packard posted a fifth-place time of 2:09.27. The 800m also saw senior Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) clock a season-best 2:13.02 and, pending other results this weekend, improve a few spots on the NCAA Division III performance list. Harris went on to register a 22.25 in the 200-meter dash.

The quartet of Rus, senior Paul-Henry Schoenhagen (Cleveland Heights, OH), Fleury and senior Warren Staver (Centreville, MD) closed out the competition with a second-place 3:15.41 in the 4x400-meter relay. The time is also currently 11th on the NCAA leaderboard. Staver and Rus were fourth and fifth in the 400-meter run with times of 48.38 and 48.46 in Saturday's final. Schoenhagen posted a 50.09 in the trials.

On Friday, senior Brandon Hoghaug (Douglas, MA) tied for fourth in the high jump with a clearance of 6-5 as classmate Jack DeVine (Wilbraham, MA) was fifth in the long jump (21-1.75). Kopellas, meanwhile, won his flight and finished 10th for the Engineers with a leap of 21-1.75.

Freshman Oliver Thomas (Goffstown, NH) came home fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (14.88) as sophomore Fabian Gaziano (Wilbraham, MA), who achieved a personal-best 15.08 in the trials, placed seventh (15.43). Freshman Mark Bray (Shrewsbury, MA) completed his heat with a 15.79. Gaziano also represented the Crimson and Gray in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.23.

The javelin featured senior Aaron Weeks (Pittsfield, MA), who took ninth with a distance of 183-3 as junior Lucas Gagne (Franklin, NH) sent the discus 141-4. Senior Tristam Winship (Bedford, NH) finished the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:44.83 and junior Michael Brady (Medway, MA) delivered a 15:13.89 in the 5,000-meter run.

The women's 4x100m relay consisting of freshman Katy Nippert (Salem, NH), freshman Arden Tanner (Ventura, CA), senior Taylor Teed (Boxford, MA) and senior Sara Velleca (Woodbury, CT) handed in a time of 48.88, their best of the season. Tanner posted a 12.48 and Teed followed with a 12.69 in the individual 100m while Tanner and Velleca finished the 200m in 25.72 and 26.27, respectively. Sophomore Ari Rozen (Carver, MA) completed the steeplechase with a season-best 11:26.89.
