Westwood, MA --- WPI senior Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) has been distinguished as the first NEWMAC basketball student-athlete to be named as the lone offensive and defensive athlete of the week for the same reporting period. Springfield's Jake Ross (Northampton, MA) was named both on the men's side this past January; however, the offensive accolades were shared with Sean Doncaster '17.
The guard was also named the WPI Women's Student-Athlete of the Week, as well as the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) Player of the Week. On Tuesday it was revealed Biney was named the Worcester Area College Basketball Association (WACBA) Women's Basketball Player of the Week.
As Biney became the 18th WPI women's basketball player to reach the 1,000-point milestone on Saturday, the local product finished the game with her third career double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, to go with two blocks and a swipe as the Engineers defeated Bates 60-42. On Tuesday, Biney scored a game-best 22 points for the second consecutive game against Central Mass. opponents as WPI defeated Nichols, 60-33. She also racked up nine boards, six steals and four assists while in Dudley.
In terms of conference accolades, it is the seniors fourth defensive weekly honor, including the first-ever, and third offensive award in just the past two seasons.
The Engineers (4-0) jump into NEWMAC action with a trip to Mount Holyoke Wednesday for a 7pm start.
