Cambridge, MA --- WPI women's rowing excelled Sunday at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta. The varsity eight placed eighth overall out of 26 boats in collegiate eight race while the second varsity eight finished 23rd in racing on a beautiful fall afternoon.
The varsity eight reached the finish line in a time of 16:43.630, just nine seconds short of a medal. The Engineers trailed Mercyhurst by nearly a second at the last checkpoint before the finish line but rowed the final segment two and a half seconds faster than the Division II Lakers (16:45.155). WPI defeated several strong rivals including Tufts (11th - 16:54.809), William Smith (12th - 16:57.442) and defending NEWMAC champion Wellesley (14th - 17:04.267).
The second varsity eight clocked a time of 18:17.910 to place 23rd. The event was won by Bates (16:01.182), with Weselyan (16:18.045) taking home the silver and Williams (16:34.657) the bronze.
The Crimson and Gray conclude the fall portion of its schedule on Saturday, October 28th at the Head of the Fish Regatta in Saratoga Springs, NY.
