Women's Rowing's Varsity Eight Earns Bronze in Impressive Performance at NIRC

WORCESTER --- The WPI women's rowing varsity eight broke the school record twice and took third in the grand final as the program placed seventh Friday at the 2018 National Invitational Rowing Championship on Lake Quinsigamond.

Bates secured the team title with 252 points while the Engineers accumulated 173.

The third-ranked crew defeated No. 4 Wesleyan, No. 10 William Smith, UNH, Simmons, St. Lawrence, who is receiving votes, and Skidmore with a then-school record 6:30.211 in the morning. The Cardinals were over three seconds behind the Engineers with a 6:33.947. No. 1 Bates won the grand final in a time of 6:24.113, followed by No. 2 Ithaca (6:27.126) and, with a new program record 6:28.145, WPI. Wesleyan, No. 9 Tufts and No. t-6 Williams were fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.

The second varsity eight captured the petite final in a time of 6:51.576. They were followed by RIT, William Smith, Ithaca, Smith and Trinity. Earlier in the day, the group was third (6:54.607), behing Bates and Wesleyan, and ahead of Trinity and Colby. 

In the third varsity eight, WPI (7:06.706) finished fourth in the grand final ahead of Ithaca and Wellesley. Bates, Williams and Wesleyan comprised the top three. Bates and Williams were also in the morning heat going 1-2. The Engineers were third (7:11.956) to best Smith, RIT and Trinity.

The women's four was a grand final only event won by Bates. Wellesley was second, Hamilton was third and WPI (8:27.279) was fourth. Rochester, Clark and William Smith rounded out the seven-team field.

WPI awaits word on a possible selection to the NCAA Championships.  Participants will be revealed Monday during a 7pm NCAA.com Selection Show with the championship scheduled for Friday, May 25th and Saturday, May 26th at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida.
