WORCESTER -- Freshman Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, MA) scored a goal and recorded an assist to lead host WPI to a 3-0 victory over Salem State in a women's soccer non-conference matchup Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
The Engineers improve to 2-0 on the year while the Vikings slip to 0-2 on the young season.
McCrea lofted the ball over the keeper in the sixth minute to record her first collegiate goal off an assist by junior Sophie Gomarlo (Swanzey, NH). McCrea went on to help setup senior Emma Turton's (Poland, ME) goal from the top right of the box in the 18th minute. The second half saw senior Erin Bracken (Bridgewater, MA) head in a feed from junior Susannah Gray (York, ME) in the 52nd minute.
The Crimson and Gray had a nifty shot saved in the ninth minute when Turton spun and struck the ball in mid-air; however, it went straight toward SSU freshman Casey McFall (Wilmington, MA), who made the stop. Salem State's first shot came in the 53rd minute as junior Allison Celia (Hopkinton, MA) took aim from the top left of the box. Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Backe (Danvers, MA) made a pair of diving stops in the 58th minute.
Backe ended up with 11 saves on the day while Engineer sophomore netminder Gabi Hoops (Stonington, CT) was called upon to make one.
In all, WPI enjoyed a 24-1 margin in shots and were awarded eight of the 11 corner kicks in the contest.
The Crimson and Gray welcomes Framingham State to Alumni Stadium Tuesday for a 7pm contest. The Vikings host Plymouth State Wednesday at 8pm.
