Fitchburg, MA --- Emma Turton (Poland, MA) netted a goal late in the 84th minute as WPI spoiled Fitchburg State's home opener as the visiting Engineers blanked the Falcons 1-0 Friday evening.
In the first half, Fitchburg State nearly took the lead 15 minutes into the frame when freshman midfielder Britny Peralta (Leominster, MA) fired a shot on target that WPI goaltender Gabi Hoops (Stonington, CT) was able to corral to preserve the 0-0 draw.
WPI's best scoring opportunity of the opening stanza occurred late in the frame as junior Mari Bailey (North Providence, RI), freshman Sophie Gomarlo (Swanzey, NH) and sophomore Hannah Modelski (Hollis, NH) each had quality scoring chances, but Falcon keeper Alexandra Foster (Leominster, MA) was up to the task, turning away all three shots for the Green and Gold as the two teams went into the break knotted at 0-0.
Following the intermission, the two defenses stood tall as Foster and Hoops traded saves to start the second half with Bailey collecting a shot for the Engineers, while Peralta posted her second shot on goal for the Falcons.
With time winding down, WPI was finally able to crack into the scoring column as senior Turton settled a through ball from classmate Erin Bracken (Bridgewater, MA) at the top of the scoring area, before Turton deposited the ball inside the far post for her second tally on the season, resulting in the 1-0 final.
Throughout the contest, WPi finished with a commanding 27-4 advantage in shots, while also holding a 3-0 edge in corner kicks. In net, Foster was stellar for the Falcons, registering a career-best 12 saves in 90 minutes of work, while Hoops stopped all four shots she faced in the complete game shutout for the Engineers.
Fitchburg State (2-1) returns to action on Tuesday as it travels to Emmanuel for a contest starting at 7pm. WPI (4-0) will host St. Lawrence on Saturday for a 1:30pm start time.
