Weston, MA --- The WPI Women's Volleyball team continued its run at the Pride Invitational hosted by Regis College on Sunday, defeating Worcester State, Rhode Island College and St. Joseph's (ME) en route to the tournament title. The wins establish a new school record for the longest winning streak to begin a season, as the team improved to 7-0 on the year.
Tournament MVP Becca Holmberg (Madison, CT) registered 34 of her 58 kills during Sunday's three games and was a key component in all three WPI victories. In the opening match against Worcester State, Holmberg notched a team-high 11 kills and 26 digs, while Becca Mattern (Vernon, CT) also recorded 11 kills and Lauren D'Angelo (Wallingford, CT) 25 digs in the hard-fought 18-25, 25-23, 29-27, 26-16 win. Alex Rangel (Weston, FL)had 36 of the team's 42 assists and Belinda Nwagbara (Santa Rosa, CA) had three service aces versus the Lancers.
In game two, Holmberg posted an impressive .458 hitting percentage with 12 kills and 12 digs to lead the Engineers to a 3-0 win over Rhode Island College (25-16, 25-11, 25-20). Bailey Sarber (Westerly, RI) had 11 kills, while Joan Porambo (Jim Thorpe, PA) paced the Crimson and Gray with 19 digs in the win.
The team wrapped up its day with a four-set win over St. Joseph's (25-17, 24-26, 25-22, 25-16). Sarber posted 13 kills to lead the Engineers in the last contest of the day, while Holmberg and Kerrin Beovich (Seaford, NY) added 11, with Beovich posting an impressive .588 hitting percentage and a team-best four service aces. Rangel added 41 of the team's 42 assists during the match, while Porambo once again led the team in digs with 19.
WPI is off until Thursday, when they will travel to Chicopee, Mass. looking to extend their unbeaten run against Elms at 7pm.
