Babson Park, MA --- Rebecca Holmberg (Madison, CT) has earned NEWMAC Player of the Week accolades in women's volleyball. The senior co-captain was outstanding as she helped WPI to seven consecutive wins to start the season, a new program record.
Holmberg began the week by registering 17 kills and 21 digs to help visiting WPI rally for a thrilling 3-2 victory over Simmons on Tuesday.
The senior outside hitter then posted six impressive performances to help the Engineers take home the Pride Invitational tournament title at Regis College over the weekend. Holmberg registered 24 kills and 19 digs during the tournament's day one action, leading WPI to a 3-0 record to start the tournament.
Holmberg then recorded three more impressive performances on Sunday to lead WPI to three more wins, a 7-0 start and the tournament title. She registered 34 of her 58 kills last week during Sunday's three matches. In the opening match against Worcester State, Holmberg notched a team-high 11 kills and 26 digs, before posting an impressive .458 hitting percentage with 12 kills and 12 digs in a game two win over Rhode Island College. She then added 11 more kills in the tournament finale, a four-set win over St. Joseph's (ME) en route to taking home tournament MVP honors.
WPI will look to continue its excellent start on Thursday at 7pm with a road contest at Elms.
