Volleyball Sweeps Tri-Match to Remain Unbeaten in 2016, Sports & Recreation Center

WORCESTER – The WPI volleyball team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology and Mount Ida by identical 3-1 scores Saturday to remain unbeaten on the season and in the Sports & Recreation Center. The Engineers topped Wentworth in the eye-opener 25-14, 20-25, 25-19, 25-21 and the Mustangs in the closer 25-17, 20-25, 25-13, 25-17. The middle match saw the Leopards blank Mount Ida 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 26-24).

WPI, who has now won all five matches played in the facility since 2014, is now 6-0 while Wentworth dips to 6-1 and Mount Ida evens out at 3-3.


WPI 3, Wentworth 1

Junior Melissa Daigle (Norfolk, MA) led all student-athletes with 13 kills and freshman Sandra Duarte (Valencia, CA) hit .524 and followed with 12. Sophomore Azita Bakhtyari (Andover, MA) produced a double-double with 25 assists and 12 digs. Sophomore Casey Hunt (Granby, CT) narrowly missed one of her own with 18 digs and nine kills. Senior Cassandra Tomerlin (La Quinta, CA) added 18 digs and classmate Shay Feeley (Franklin, MA) chipped in with 15 helpers.

For Wentworth, freshman Claire Quick (Mission Viejo, CA) came up with 25 digs and 10 kills as classmate Leah Rogoz (Woodridge, IL) tallied 12 digs and 11 swipes. Freshman Katie Clouse (Hudson Falls, NY) doled out 22 assists to go along with 13 from junior Katelyn Carlson (Stratford, CT). Sophomore Lillie Clark (Vista, CA) posted 10 digs as freshman Samantha Lassiter (Rogers, AR) and junior Caroline Shea (Abington, MA) totaled seven block assists.


Wentworth 3, Mount Ida 0

Quick turned in another double-double thanks to 11 digs and 10 kills. Carlson, who narrowly missed a double-double, handed out 10 more assists to go along with three aces. Clark dug out 15 balls followed by Rogoz with 10.

Senior Molly Alkinburg (Port Deposit, MD) delivered a match-best 14 kills and freshman Alexis Bell (Salem, CT) handed out a match-high 22 helpers for Mount Ida. Junior Mary Kate Reidy (Agawaum, MA) turned in 14 digs and senior Alysha Dunbar (Quincy, MA) added 10.

The Leopards were down as much as 10 in the third set before a 13-2 run turned the deficit into a 23-22 lead. It would be tied again at 23-23 and 24-24 until an attack miscue and a service ace by Lassiter sealed the victory.


WPI 3, Mount Ida 1

Hunt swatted eight kills as Duarte served up a quartet of aces. Bakhtyari (17) and Feeley (13) totaled 30 assists while Hunt also came up with 11 digs to accompany a match-high 22 by sophomore Victoria Nassar (Salem, NH). Hunt and junior Brooke Klepper (Miami Beach, FL) each helped on three blocks.

Reidy secured a double-double with 14 kills and 18 digs. Bell dished out 28 helpers while sophomore Kristy Walton (Fairhaven, MA), freshman Eleni Tsetsos (Waterbury, CT) and Dunbar logged 13, 12 and 10 digs, respectively.


The Engineers open NEWMAC action Tuesday at MIT and Wentworth heads to Lasell. Both matches are a 7pm first serve. Mount Ida heads to Curry Tuesday for a 6pm start.
