Cambridge, MA --- Megan Gebhard (Howell, MI) and Abby Bertics (La Jolla, CA) both tallied 13 kills as host MIT defeated previously undefeated WPI 3-0 in the NEWMAC opener for both squads on Tuesday evening. The homestanding Engineers took the match by scores of 25-17, 25-19, 25-18.
Maddy Werth (Bedford, MA) led the WPI hitting parade with a .238 kill percentage. The senior smacked eight kills and committed with three errors in 21 tries. Melissa Daigle (Norfolk, CT) matched Werth with a .238 hitting percentage after smashing seven kills and committing just two errors in 21 attempts. Kat Hurlock (Burlington, CT) also hit well, posting a .250 hitting percentage on five kills with one error in 16 tries but the rest of the Engineers hit at just a .000 clip (6 kills, 6 errors, 45 attempts). Casey Hunt (Granby, CT) joined Hurlock with five kills.
Azita Bakhtyari (Andover, MA) led the Crimson and Gray setters with 15 assists while Shay Feeley (Franklin, MA) doled out 10 helps. Hunt (15) combined Cassandra Tomerlin (La Quinta, CA) (14) for 29 digs while Brooke Klepper (Miami Beach, FL) (4), Hurlock (3), Werth (2) and Sandra Duarte (Valencia, CA) (2) all posted multi block assists.
Christina Liao (Warren, NJ) accounted for 30 assists for the hosts and Tori Wuthrich (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI) paced all players with 17 digs on the night for MIT, which hit .283 as a team.
WPI continues its NEWMAC season-opening road trip Saturday with an 11am tri-match at Wheaton with non-conference foe Bridgewater State. MIT heads to Springfield Saturday for a 1pm match-up of conference schools receiving votes in the national coaches poll.
