Hunt, Bakhtyari and Feeley Post Double-Doubles in Volleyball Road Sweep

Norton, MA --- Sophomore Casey Hunt (Granby, CT), sophomore Azita Bakhtyari (Andover, MA) and senior Shay Feeley (Franklin, MA) each handed in a double-double against Wheaton as the WPI volleyball team defeated the Lyons, 3-2, and Bridgewater State, 3-0, Saturday.

With the wins, WPI is now 8-1 (1-1 NEWMAC) while the Lyons are 7-6 (0-1 NEWMAC) and the Bears are 1-7.

The Engineers and Lyons traded set wins with the hosts taking the first one before the Crimson and Gray went on to take the five-setter (18-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-23, 15-13).

WPI, who was picked to finish seventh in the NEWMAC, edged Wheaton in hitting percentage .129 to .098. Defensively, The Boynton Hillers had the advantage at the net, coming up with 22 blocks to the Lyons 11, while both teams were fairly even in digs with the Engineers finishing with 87 to Wheaton's 82.

Hunt amassed 11 kills and 25 digs while Bakhtyari handed out 27 assists to go with 14 digs and Feeley doled out 17 helpers and added 11 digs. Senior Maddy Werth (Bedford, MA) shared team-high honors of 11 kills followed by junior Melissa Daigle (Norfolk, MA) with 10. Senior Cassandra Tomerlin (La Quinta, CA) totaled 26 digs as junior Kelly Rathje (Scituate, MA) dug out 11 balls. Hunt and junior Brooke Klepper (Miami Beach, FL) combined for 10 block assists.

Wheaton was led in kills by sophomore Cathryn MacGregor (North Andover, MA), who knocked down 15, while earning a service ace and two assists. Sophomore Claire Cansler (Newhall, CA) also notched double-digit kills, earning 12, while picking up a team-high four blocks. Junior Stephanie Martin (Centreville, MA) finished with a match-high 31 digs for Wheaton, while freshman Becca Houghton (Emmanus, PA) picked up 19, MacGregor 14 and Sadie Stewart 10. Houghton also finished with five aces.

In the second match of the day WPI used set scores of 25-15, 25-23 and 28-26 to dispatch Bridgewater State.

Hunt led the way with 13 kills while Feeley paced the team with 20 assists and Rathje added 10 digs. Klepper added five more block assists to her daily total.

Senior Hannah Maymon (Narragansett, RI) paced the Bears with 10 kills to go with 25 assists by classmate Charleyne Panner (Gilford, NH). Sophomore Cassidy Tyros (Chelmsford, MA), Maymon and Panner all recorded double-digit digs with 13, 12 and 10, respectively.

WPI and Wheaton resume conference action Tuesday at 7pm. The Crimson and Gray host Emerson while the Lyons travel to Wellesley. Bridgewater State hosts Regis Thursday at 6pm.
