Volleyball Sinks Coast Guard For Second Time in Program History and First Since 1998

New London, CT --- Sophomore Casey Hunt (Granby, CT) had a match and season-high 19 kills to go with 18 digs leading WPI to its fourth straight win, a 3-2 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over host Coast Guard Thursday night. Freshman Sandra Duarte's (Valenica, CA) kill secured the victory for the Engineers.

WPI (10-1, 3-1) snapped an 18-match losing streak against Coast Guard winning for just the second time in 22 meetings. It was the Engineers first win in New London after 11 straight losses.

The Engineers won by game scores of 27-25, 25-22, 17-25, 22-25, 15-11 to improve to 10-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference while Coast Guard saw its three-game win streak snapped dropping to 6-5 overall and 2-2 in NEWMAC play. This was the fifth five game match of the season for Coast Guard which is 2-3 in those matches.

Senior Cassandra Tomerlin (La Quinta, CA) led WPI with 19 digs while sophomore Azita Bakhtyari (Andover, MA) had a team-high 18 assists in the win.

In the opening game it was all Coast Guard early as the Bears raced to a 13-4 lead. WPI would however score six straight and 12 of the next 14 points to take a 16-15 lead.

The Bears regained the lead 18-17 before WPI ran off four of the next five points for a 21-19 lead. Coast Guard rallied by scoring five of the next six points to take a 24-22 lead. The Engineers would fight off a pair of game points scoring three straight for a 25-24 lead before Coast Guard tied it 25-25. WPI would take advantage of a pair of errors by the Bears to win the opener 27-25.

The second game was tied 12-12 before Coast Guard scored five of the next six for a 17-13 advantage.  The Engineers would tally four of the next five cutting the deficit to 18-17. The Bears would score four of the next six taking a 22-19 lead before WPI got a kill from senior Maddy Werth (Bedford, MA) and classmate Shay Feeley (Franklin, MA) served five straight points as WPI won 25-22.

Coast Guard would score six straight in the third game to double up WPI 16-8 and the Bears maintained that lead throughout for a 25-17 win.

The fourth game was tied 7-7 before Coast Guard scored three straight for a 10-7 lead. With Coast Guard still leading by three at 17-14, WPI would tie it 20-20 before Coast Guard scored five of the final seven for the 25-22 win.

WPI jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the fifth and deciding game and never looked back. Coast Guard would get as close as 6-5 before three straight pushed the lead to 9-5 and won 15-11.

Freshman Angelou Dunton (Seattle, WA) led Coast Guard with 17 kills to go with nine digs. Junior Madison Scott (Lusby, MD) (4 blocks) and freshman Alexi Deane (Cooper City, FL) each added nine kills for the Bears. Freshman Makenna Martin (Granbury. TX) had a match-high 46 assists. Junior Michelle McGill (Atlantic Beach, FL) led the Bears with 17 digs while freshman Ali Gates (Kansas City, MO) added 13 digs.

WPI hosts NEWMAC foe Wellesley and non-conference opponent Rivier Saturday in an 11am trimatch. Coast Guard is back in action on Friday night when the Bears host New London rival Connecticut College at 7:00.
