Volleyball Falls to Trinity and Rhode Island College in Hartford Tri-Match

Hartford, CT --- The WPI volleyball went on the road Saturday and dropped a pair of matches at a triangular at Trinity.  The Engineers fell to the host Bantams 3-2 (21-25, 25-19, 27-25, 21-25, 15-13) before being defeated by Rhode Island College 3-1 (25-16, 17-25, 25-23, 26-24). 

The Engineers won the first set versus Trinity and then was forced to rally from a 2-1 deficit and actually led 8-6 at the fifth set change over.  Casey Hunt (Granby, MA) smashed a match-best 15 kills and made just two errors in 47 attempts.  Kat Hurlock (Burlington, CT) added 12 kills while Maddy Werth (Bedford, MA) chipped in with nine and Brooke Klepper (Miami Beach, FL) seven.  

Blocking was on full display for the Crimson and Gray in the opener as Kleeper had one solo and five assist and Samantha Bircsak (Acton, MA) tallied five block assists.  Shay Feeley (Franklin, MA) and Azita Bakhtyari (Andover, MA) joined Hunt with double-doubles.  Feeley totaled 20 assists and 13 digs, while Bakhtyari amassed 17 helpers and 16 digs and Hunt collected 22 digs to go along with her 15 kills.  Victoria Nassar (Salem, NH) and Kelly Rathje (Scituate, MA) also reached double-digits in digs with 32 and 13 respectively.       

In their second match of the day, the Boynton Hillers bounced back after dropping the first set to claim set two.  The Anchorwomen came back to take the next two sets and the match. Werth led the hit parade with 15 kills and Hunt posted her second straight double-double with 12 kills and 17 digs. 

Rathje was one off a match-high with 24 digs while Feeley registered 17 of her own.  Bakhtyari doled out a team-best 13 assists while Hurlock contributed a career-high 10.  Klepper (6) and Bircsak (5) combined for 11 kills.  

WPI (17-6) returns to NEWMAC play on Tuesday, hosting Springfield at 7pm.
