WPI Athletics Weekly Update #21

Lou Doherty scored a career-high 11 points in nine minutes off the bench in the first half while Chris Rodgers and Jake Wisniewski totaled 33 points on the night as visiting WPI held off upset-minded Clark, 82-74, in a NEWMAC Men's Basketball game that aired live on CharterTV3.  The Engineers have now bested their city and conference foes 16 consecutive times. Madison Beck led all scorers with 18 points and added a key steal in the waning seconds as WPI collected a hard-earned 61-54 victory over visiting MIT in a NEWMAC women's basketball contest played Saturday afternoon in Harrington Auditorium. With the victory, WPI improves to 16-5 on the season and 9-3 in conference play.

Mike Ilic and Dan Wensley teamed up to win all four of their bouts at Wrestling swept two matches Saturday at its home super quad in the Sports & Recreation Center.  The Engineers shutout Bridgewater State 47-0 in their opener before besting NYU 27-16 in the nightcap. WPI, ranked 21st in the most recent (NWCA) National Wrestling Coaches Association Top 25, moves its record to 17-4 on the season.

Swimmer Jack Bauer and diver Randy Melanson were double individual event winners and Bauer and Jackson Perry were part of all four winning relays as Men’s Swimming and Diving concluded its home schedule Saturday by hosting the Tech Sprints.  Jillian Clemente, Stephanie Marcucci and Olivia Hanson swam to individual victories and the 100 yard freestyle earned gold to highlight Women’s Swimming and Diving’s performance.

Austin Scott and Ryan Wittenberg each broke their own record as Men’s Track and Field took part in the Tufts Cupid Challenge Saturday inside Gantcher Field House.  Scott clocked a 4:13.05 mile to better his school record by .41 seconds and move from 20th to seventh on the NCAA Division III performance list. Wittenberg lowered his time by just over a second, and is up a spot to fifth on the national scroll, with a 1:53.94 in the 800-meter run. Sydney Packard broke yet another record for Women's Track & Field.  Packard's 3,000-meter run time of 10:18.71 was over 10 seconds better than the previous mark of 10:28.76.  Lea Strangio collected a first-place finish in the 600-meter dash with a time of 1:38.99 and was part of the winning 4x800 relay team.

Your lone opportunity to check out a home game next week is on Saturday when Men’s Basketball tangles with Emerson at 2pm in Harrington.  Both basketball teams head to Babson on Wednesday with the women beginning at 6pm and the men at 8pm while Track and Field has a split schedule at the BU Valentine Invitational with the women competing on Friday and the men on Saturday.  Other road action on Saturday includes Women’s Basketball at Clark at 1pm, Swimming and Diving in the Cougar Invitational also at 1pm and Wrestling at Springfield at 7pm.
