Boston, MA --- Led by men's swimming and diving seniors Ricky Coffin (Pleasant Valley, NY) and Tim Petri (Eksjö, Sweden), and women's swimming and diving seniors Emily Martin (Penfield, NY) and Abbey Nack (Ghent, NY), 28 WPI winter student-athletes were designated Academic All-NEWMAC for their work in the classroom.
The swimming & diving foursome each collected their third certificate while 14 others were repeat honorees and 10 were cited in their first year of eligibility.
Men's swimming & diving collected the most by volume with a dozen. Senior Andrew Bauer (Cumberland, RI) was a second year selection along with juniors Bryant Babel (Oceanside, NY), Karim Elsayed (Cairo, Egypt), Mike Giancola (Southwick, MA), Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA) and David Smallwood (Bangor, ME). First-time recipients featured sophomores Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI), Roberto Esquivel (Tegucigalpa, Honduras), Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI) and Hendrick Suwirjo (Derry, NH).
For women's swimming & diving, senior Eva Childers (Henniker, NH) and juniors Jennifer Day (Chelmsford, MA), Hayley Poskus (Middleboro, MA) and Kaitlin Travers (Northampton, MA) added a second to their collection. Sophomores Caroline Flynn (Norwell, MA), Kelly Martin (Penfield, NY), Jill Onishi (Groton, MA) and Jenna Vandervort (Voorheesville, NY) each picked up their first nod.
Women's Basketball saw juniors Ama Biney (Worcester, MA), Maura Buckley (Melrose, MA) and Brittney Lambert (Hudson, NH) land their second as sophomores Katie Nugent (Huntington, NY) and Kendra O'Malley (Charlton, MA) took home their first. Junior Chris Rodgers (Franklin, MA), who claimed his second accolade, was Men's Basketball's lone representative.
Honorees must have met the following criteria: earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale or 4.35/5.0 scale after the 2016 fall semester, achieved second year academic status at his or her institution, and been a member of the varsity team for the entire season.
