WORCESTER -- The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at WPI hosted a very special event Sunday, March 26. The Special Olympics of Central Massachusetts Basketball Community Games were held in the campus Sports and Recreation Center.

Over 150 WPI student-athletes, coaches and staff welcomed and cheered on the Special Olympic basketball teams, as they competed. It was an event that no one will soon forget.

Five teams were able to participate in the event: COH Bulldogs, COH Ducks, COH Grizzlies, MASS Jayhawks, and the MASS Bandits. WPI had representatives from their Varsity teams helping assist with scorekeeping, timing and announcing. Student athletes from the Women's and Men's basketball teams acted as referees for the games; however, the best part of the event for many in attendance, was seeing the WPI student athletes from a number of programs cheering during the games.

The event was a big success. The games were even better especially with some late, last second drama and buzzer beating shots.

Jon Scully, who is the Sports Manager for Special Olympics of Massachusetts said, "Thanks to the generosity and partnership with schools like WPI, we are able to provide additional competition opportunities like this for our athletes."

Assistant WPI Women's basketball coach, Brittney Kenney, shared her thoughts on what a day like this meant, saying "We were very excited to be able to host the Special Olympics and their athletes once again this year. Being that it was my first year to help with the event, I was overwhelmed with the amount of support that the WPI Athletic Community brought. We have a really amazing group of athletes and colleagues that truly represent WPI so well. We look forward to continuing this partnership for years to come!"

SAAC thanks all teams and coaches involved, as well as the Special Olympics of Central Massachusetts for allowing WPI to host such a great event.
