Boston, MA --- Led by 15 three-time honorees, 60 WPI spring student-athletes across five sports achieved NEWMAC Academic All-Conference status. Women's Rowing led the conference while Baseball and Women's Track & Field tied for the top spot on their lists while the track programs boasted 16 selections each.
The women's rowers were led by seniors Audrey Allen (Topsfield, MA), Jennifer Golden (Norton, MA) and Victoria Loehle (Morganville, NJ) who were recognized each of the past three seasons. Classmate Emily Richardson (Portland, OR) returned to the list after a one year hiatus. Junior Alexandra Connor (Baldwinsville, NY) was a first timer as well as sophomores Eva Barinelli (Tewksbury, MA), Madeline Burke (Verona, NJ), Diana Celaj (Worcester, MA), Catherine Matyas (Glastonbury, CT), Paula Sardi (Cali, Colombia) and Sarah St. Pierre (Maynard, MA).
Seniors Dan Bettigole (South Windsor, CT) and Mike Vaitkunas (Auburn, MA) were a perfect 3-for-3 as graduate student Anthony Capuano (Stoneham, MA), and seniors CJ Doskocil (Sterling, MA) and Connor Kurtz (Lunenburg, MA) were honored for the second time. Sophomores Sam Bacchiocchi (Freetown, MA), Adam Bettigole (South Windsor, CT), Tommy McCarthy (Jefferson, MD), Kyle Opiekun (Cumberland, RI) and Tyler Weiss (Monroe, CT) were feted in their first year of eligibility.
Graduate student Julie Tevenan (Weymouth, MA) along with seniors Liz Hansen (Richmond, RI) and Kimberlee Kocienski (Schaghticoke, NY) claimed their third nod as classmate Elizabeth Walfield (Bath, ME) took home her second. The junior class was paced by Brittney Lambert (Hudson, NH), Emily Newman (Easton, MA) and Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) with their second accolade. Senior Marguerite Carey (Middleboro, MA), as well as juniors Emma MacIntyre (Grand Island, NY) and Abby McAdams (Montville, CT) secured their first as did sophomores Michelle Gencorelli (Andover, MA), Cole Godzinski (North Reading, MA), Steffany Halfrey (Hubbardston, MA), Xandria Korn (Woodinville, WA), Katie Nugent (Huntington, CT) and Kendra O'Malley (Charlton, MA).
The men were guided by seniors Brian D'Amore (Medfield, MA), Nick Dalton (Woburn, MA), Kyle Morrison (York, ME) and Austin Scott (Waddington, NY) with three each. Classmates Andrew Dunne (Westford, MA), Nathan Stomberg (W. Greenwich, RI) and Hugh Whelan (Madison, CT) got their name back on after taking home honors in 2015. Second time juniors included Jack DeVine (Wilbraham, MA), James Doty (Queensbury, NY) and Brendan Johnson (Pembroke, MA). Senior Daniel Mortimer (Shrewsbury, MA), juniors Warren Staver (Centreville, MD) and Aaron Weeks (Pittsfield, MA) and sophomores Lucas Acaba (Groton, MA), Lucas Gagne (Franklin, NH) and Kevin Pawlak (Westford, MA) were all first time selections.
Seniors Lindsay Gurska (Revere, MA), Caroline Medino (Pompton Lakes, NJ) and Hope Shevchuk (Burlington, CT) headlined the softball list as three-time picks. Junior repeat honorees featured Ama Biney (Worcester, MA), Katie Chagami (Waipahu, HI) and RiAnna May (Westminster, CO). Senior Kristin Gallagher (Coventry, RI) claimed her first.
Honorees must have met the following criteria: earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale or 4.35/5.0 scale after the 2016 fall semester, achieved second year academic status at his/her institution, and been a member of the varsity team for the entire season.
The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) consists of 11 highly selective institutions committed to academic excellence: Babson College, Clark University, U.S Coast Guard Academy, Emerson College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, Springfield College, Wellesley College, Wheaton College, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
