WORCESTER – The WPI wrestling and men's and women's swimming & diving teams have recently garnered national rankings.
The wrestling team climbed back into the (National Wrestling Coaches Association) NWCA national poll for the first time in two years following an impressive start to the season. The No. 19 Engineers are 6-0 in dual meet competition, including a 36-6 victory over then No. 16 Cortland this past weekend. WPI also won the RIT Invitational title at the beginning of the month. Regionally the Crimson and Gray are third in the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) dual meet ranking and fifth in the tournament rankings.
Individually, The Engineers boast a ranked grappler in seven of the 10 weight classes as of the most recent NEWA rankings. Tyler Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA) is second at 157 while Stephen Jendritz (Rockford, MI) and Dan Wensley (Wakefield, MA) are third at 133 and 184, respectively. Michael Curtis (Wells, ME) is fourth at 197 while Pete Nash (Liverpool) and Austin Shrewsbury (Westfield, MA) are fourth at 149 and 285.
Prior to Thanksgiving, Men's Swimming & Diving was slotted 23rd in the first regular season College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) / TYR Top 25 Division III Poll. Last week the group was ranked 18th in the CollegeSwimming.com Championship Top 15 and No. 20 in the Dual Meet Top 50. The women were also 18th on the championship list, as well as 46th on the dual meet scrolls. Look for a new CSCAA rankings mid-week.
The championship rankings consider four scorers per event and three individual events per swimmer, in the 50, 100, 200, 500, 1650 Freestyle, 100, 200 Backstroke, 100, 200 Breaststroke, 100, 200 Butterfly, 200, 400 Individual Medley, 200, 400 Medley Relay, and 200, 400, 800 Freestyle Relay.
The dual meet rankings take into account two scorers per event and three individual events per swimmer in the 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 Freestyle, 100 or 200 Backstroke, 100 or 200 Butterfly, 200 or 400 Individual Medley, 200 or 400 Medley Relay, and 200, 400 or 800 Freestyle Relay.
