Nichols Earns Elevation to Full-Time Status as Recreation Coordinator

Joe Nichols

WORCESTER – WPI Assistant Director of Facilities & Recreation Meredith Merchant recently announced Joe Nichols was elevated to full-time status with the title of Recreation Coordinator.

"We are thrilled to have Joe join the PERA Department full-time," remarked Merchant. "He has six years under his belt with our department as he was part of the original part-time building supervisor staff to open the Sports & Recreation Center in 2012. He brings great positivity, expertise, and motivation to the new position, and we look forward to the future of him being part of our team."

After obtaining a master's degree in sport management from West Virginia in 2013, Nichols also served WPI as a sports information intern for two years where he also gained experience in compliance. Since taking on the new role this past July, he has restructured the intramural program, including the first-ever women's flag football division, developed a participant manual and trained the intramural staff. In addition to taking the Sports & Recreation Center social media presence to another level, Nichols' efforts have included the fourth floor feature wall, as well as, collaborating with marketing, and upgrading bulletin boards and television content to increase awareness across campus.

As a member of National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) and Massachusetts Association for Recreational Sports (MARS), Nichols has been on a number of committees and was selected as the professional scholarship recipient for last fall's NIRSA regional conference.

"I am fortunate enough to finally see my hard work pay off and join a great group of people in the WPI Athletics Department," said Nichols. "I am excited to take over an already established intramural program and see how I can develop it more to get the students even more involved and have a great experience while participating. I look forward to working with both Meredith and Ann to create some exciting buzz about recreation as a whole around campus. To me this is where I want to be, what I set out to do when I was an undergrad and I am just thrilled that I have the opportunity to work for WPI as the Recreation Coordinator."

The 2011 graduate of Cazenovia College has a Bachelors in Professional Studies with a concentration in management and sports management degree.
