Westwood, MA --- Highlighted by 32 members of the swimming and diving squads, 23 from the women's side and nine from the men's side, 40 WPI winter student-athletes were named to their respective NEWMAC Academic All-Conference Teams. The women's basketball squad added six, while the men's basketball were represented by a pair of athletes.
Five athletes earned the accolade for the third time in their career including men's and women's swimming seniors Chris Nelson (Millbury, MA), Sofie De Olviera (Portland, ME), Emma Edwardson (Cary, NC), Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA), and Leigh Whitehorn (Madison, NJ).
For the second time as an Engineer, basketball juniors Colin McNamara (Arlington, MA), and Maddie Blake (Bedford, NH) earned their second-straight honor while men's swim senior Joshua Driscoll (Haverhill, MA) and junior Emmett McCann (Seattle, WA) were repeat honorees. On the women's swim side, seniors Mackenzie Karnilaw (Houston, TX) and Anna Matsco (Windham, NH) and juniors Erica Houghton (Berkley, MA), Anne Hughes (Woodbury, NJ), Julia Noel (Beverly, MA), Elena Raden (Hockessin, DE), Nicole Shedd (North Reading, MA), Molly Silsby (Augusta, ME), and Shelvey Swett (Olympia, WA) registered their second-straight honor.
First time honorees include MBB senior Lou Doherty (Arlington, MA), WBB junior Sara Lyons (Pittsford, NY), and sophomores Victoria Mirecki (Rock Tavern, NY), Bailey Savage (Charlton, MA), Alex Scariati (Scotch Plains, NJ) and Jordan Wynn (Groton, MA), men's swimmers Evan Buckley (Burnt Hills, NY), John Carroll (Naperville, IL), Peter Fagerholm (Newtown, CT), Cory Helmuth (South Bend, IN), BK Jeong (Marshfield, MA), and Justin Policari (Winchester, MA) and women's swim seniors Alice Morgan (Cornwall, NY) and Carol Wang (Framingham, MA), junior Daire Daly (Sharon, MA), and sophomores Sophie Chase (South Portland, ME), Rayna Harter (Plainfield, IL), Sarah MacDonald (Yorktown Heights, NY), Monika Nowak (Longmeadow, MA), Katherine Pawlak (Westford, MA), Olivia Petropulos (Hollis, NH), and Kirsten Stevens (Reading, MA).
Honorees must have met the following criteria: earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale or 4.35/5.0 scale after the 2019 fall semester, achieved second year academic status at their institution, and been a member of the varsity team for the entire season.
The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference consists of 11 highly selective institutions committed to academic excellence: Babson College, Clark University, U.S Coast Guard Academy, Emerson College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, Springfield College, Wellesley College, Wheaton College, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
