Spring Sportsmanship Team

Westwood, MA --- WPI seniors Christine Hovermale (Alameda, CA) and David Larson (Port Tobacco, MD) and juniors Lauren Kaija (Reading, VT), Skylar O'Connell (North Attleboro, MA), and Benjamin Steeves (Hollis, ME) were named to their respective NEWMAC sportsmanship teams for the spring season.

Larson represents the baseball team, O'Connell represents the softball squad, Hovermale represents women's rowing and Steeves and Kaija represent the men's and women's track and field teams.

What They Are Saying …

Baseball head coach Mike Callahan on David Larson – " Dave exemplifies what sportsmanship is all about. Win or loose he treated his opponents with class and respect."

Softball head coach Whitney Goldstein on Skylar O'Connell - "Sky always gives her teammates, opponents, and officials the highest level of respect along with playing with the utmost integrity when she is on the field, off the field, and at practice. Sky sets a positive example of hard work, commitment, and great sportsmanship while representing her community, family, and WPI proudly."

Track and Field head coach Brian Chabot on Lauren Kaija – "Lauren is an impressive person overall but is exactly what you want as a teammate and competitor. She loves to battle each weekend but appreciates her competitors and the role they play in helping her achieve at the highest level. She's the first to extend a congratulatory hand after a hard fought race or to support her teammates in achieving their goals."

Track and Field head coach Brian Chabot on Benjamin Steeves – "Sportsmanship defines Ben. He's always there for his teammates. Getting them pumped up before their competition and then congratulating them on their performance after. He's no different with his opponents; he appreciates how they help push him to not only their best but his best as well. He is an outstanding representative for WPI and WPI Track & Field."

Women's Rowing head coach Jason Steele on Christine Hovermale – "Christine Hovermale has been the lynch-pin of the Varsity 8 since 2017.  Her steady work-ethic and humility towards her own significant athletic talent and achievements are hallmarks of a true sportswoman and an inspiration to teammates and coaches alike."

Now in its third year, the NEWMAC All-Sportsmanship team is intended to recognize one student-athlete from each team, in every sport that best demonstrates the ideals of the NEWMAC and its Code of Conduct, regardless of his/her overall performance or statistics for the season.
