Bill Shields, you were always a man on the go. You played football in the fall and basketball in the winter, then ran track and played club lacrosse in the spring. Your unrelenting desire to compete helped you become one of the best athletes in the annals of WPI sports.
A Worcester product, you began your athletic career at St. John's High School in Shrewsbury. A four-year starter on the WPI football team, you went on to become a captain in your final season. You led the team in receiving in each of your last two seasons. During your four years, you caught 31 passes for 308 yards and three touchdowns. Theses and other achievements earned you widespread respect and recognition including All-New England and Little All-Ameria honors.
You also made your mark in basketball. You scored 140 points and co-captained the teamduring your final season. In all, the athlete known as "Gusser" would earn nine varsity letters.
Since your graduation, your affection for your alma mater has never wavered and the Institute has never been far from your thoughts. You have frequently volunteered for the WPI Alumni Association, serving as the chairman for your 20th Reunion and as chair of the Gift Committee for your 25th Reunion, among other posts.
Bill Shields, it is with great admiration that we recognize your athletic achievements and service to WPI by inducting you into the WPI Athletic Hall of Fame.
