Eagle Lake, FL --- Sophomore David Trujillo (Sutton, MA) hurled a four-hit shutout in the opener to help WPI pick up a split with Westfield State on its final day in the RussMatt Baseball Tournament in Central Florida. The Engineers took game one 2-0 before Westfield squeaked out a 6-5 decision in the nightcap.
Scoreless going into the top of the sixth, the Engineers took the lead when Kyle Bartosik (Midland Park, NJ) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and then went up 2-0 when Mitch McClune (Pembroke, MA) hit an RBI single to left field. It was all the offense WPI would need as Trujillo struck nine while allowing only four hits in seven innings.
In the second game, the Crimson and Gray posted five runs in the bottom of the second to a 5-4 lead, but could not hold it as Westfield State scored two in the top of the fifth and held on for the win. John Flynn (Albion, ME) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Matt Blakeman (Bedford, NH) hit a 2-RBI single to right field. McClune went 2-for-3 with with an RBI.
WPI concludes its 10-game Spring Break trip with a 7-3 mark and will make its New England debut Tuesday at 3:30pm against Johnson & Wales in Rhode Island.
