Steve Petry

Winter Haven, Fla. -- The WPI men's baseball team pulled through in a pair of one-run wins against Anna Maria to move above .500 eight games into its 10-game Spring Break stretch down in Florida. Brendan Walsh (Windham, NH) took home on a double steal in the sixth inning of the first game, 3-2, while Steve Petry (Worcester, MA) crushed a walk-off hit over the left fielder to score Vinny D'Ambrosio (Mahopac, NY) and win the second game, 8-7.

The first game also brought a masterful complete game by Taylor Landry (Kennebunk, ME), who allowed one earned run and struck out five, while the nightcap saw offensive explosions out of Zach Blanchard (Warwick, RI) and Sean Greene (Hingham, MA).

David Trujillo (Sutton, MA) smacked a two-run homer in the fourth inning for the game's first runs, making it 2-0, but the AMCATS (2-6) leveled in the bottom half of the inning.

Trujillo reached base again in the sixth and initiated the winning double steal.

Blanchard (4 for 4, 2 RBI) crossed the plate for the first of three runs scored by him in the nightcap, coming in off a Alex Venditti (Newton, MA) single to cut an early deficit to 2-1.

WPI (5-3) trailed the AMCATS, 3-1, in the third, but added three runs to take the lead, 4-3, in the bottom half of the inning. Sean Kelly (Shrewsbury, MA) and Anthony Capuano (Stoneham, MA). Blanchard followed them with an RBI double and Greene a two-run single.

Blanchard added a run-scoring single in the fourth inning as both teams tacked on two more runs to make it, 6-5, entering the fifth.

Anna Maria added singled runs in the fifth and sixth innings to regain the lead, 7-6, going into the final frame, but the Crimson and Gray came back to seal the sweep.

WPI closes out its 10-game Florida spring break trip with a doubleheader against Roger Williams on Saturday starting at 10am.
