Baseball Works Extra in Split with Keene State

Lakeland, FL --- The WPI baseball team worked a little extra to walk off with a 3-2 (8 inn.) win before falling 5-3 to Keene State at the RussMatt Invitational on Friday.

With one out in the bottom of the extra frame, Anthony Capuano (Stoneham, MA) put the ball in play allowing Sean Greene (Hingham, MA) to score the game-ending run courtesy of a miscue.

After four scoreless frames, Keene State (1-1) scored in the fifth and then in the seventh for the 2-0 lead. The Crimson and Gray (6-4) leveled the game in the bottom of the seventh to force the additional inning. John Mulready (Rockland, MA) used a two-out pinch hit appearance to put the Engineers on the board. Vinny D'Ambrosio (Mahopac, NY) followed by putting the ball in play to chase home Evan Lacroix (Methuen, MA), who was pinch running for Mulready.

Greene batted 2-for-4 and Alex Venditti (Newton, MA) walked twice while Capuano added a double. Taylor Landry (Kennebunk, ME) scattered four hits and fanned five in the complete-game for the Engineers.

After three scoreless stanzas in the nightcap, WPI won the fourth inning with three runs. Venditti broke the stalemate when he launched a 1-1 pitch over the right field fence. DJ Ouellette (Watertown, CT) and John Caliri (Hanson, MA) followed with RBI singles. The Owls cut their deficit to one in the bottom of the frame. Keene State later pulled ahead with a three-run fifth.

Venditti (2-for-3), Greene (2-for-4) and Ouellette (2-for-4) notched a pair of hits in the nightcap.

Mike Duclos (Greenfield, MA) started for the Engineers while CJ Doskocil (Sterling, MA) was tagged with the decision. The pair teamed up to strike out seven.

WPI closes out its southern swing with a 9:30am appointment tomorrow morning with Daniel Webster.
