Doskocil and Cote Help Baseball Dodge MIT and Rain in 8-4 Triumph

CJ Doskocil

Northboro, MA --- CJ Doskocil (Sterling, MA) allowed just one earned run over six innings and battery mate Matt Cote (Burrillville, RI) collected three hits as WPI defeated visiting MIT 8-4 in a NEWMAC baseball contest played Tuesday afternoon at a rainy New England Baseball Complex.

The host Engineers, winners of three straight, improve to 14-10 overall and 5-5 in conference action while MIT, slips to 9-5 on the season and 5-1 in NEWMAC play.

MIT dented the scoring column with two outs in the top of the first when Austin Filiere (Chandler, Ariz.) launched his third homer of the season only to see WPI answer back with a Alex Venditti (Newton, MA) RBI single in the bottom of the frame.  The two teams then traded two run uprisings with the hosts playing a pair in the bottom of the second on a Sean Greene (Hingham, MA) single and an MIT throwing error and the guests receiving a two-run double by the current NEWMAC Offensive Player of the Week Parker Tew (Chapel Hill, NC) in the top of the third.

WPI took the lead for good in the bottom of the third when Zach Blanchard (Warwick, RI) came plate ward on an error.

With WPI leading 4-3 after three innings, the game then turned into a pitcher's duel between Doskocil and reigning NEWMAC Pitcher of the Year David Hesslink (San Diego, CA) with neither team mustering a run in the middle three innings.  The homestanding Engineers then got some insurance off the MIT bullpen with a Blanchard sacrifice fly and a Cote run-producing single in the seventh and a two-run single from Sean Kelly (Shrewsbury, MA) in the eighth sandwiched around a Kendall Helbert (St. Louis, MO) sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth for MIT.  In the eighth inning, WPI was able to wiggle out of a bases loaded jam when reliever Steven D'Agostino (Shrewsbury, MA) induced an inning-ending fly out to left field.

Doskocil evened his mark at 2-2 on the year while matching his career-high with six strikeouts (four looking).  D'Agostino went the final five outs for his second save while Dan Bettigole (South Windsor, CT) registered four key outs in relief as well.  Hesslink (2-1) fanned seven while only allowing two earned runs over six innings for the visiting Engineers.

Cote was the only repeat hitter for WPI, who totaled eight hits, all singles while Filiere was the lone MIT hitter to notch two hits.

WPI is off until Friday, when it begins a three-game series with a 3:30pm road game at Coast Guard.  MIT returns to Central Mass Wednesday for a 3:30pm matchup with Clark.
