Westwood, MA --- WPI juniors David Larson (Port Tobacco, MD) and Tyrone Patterson (Upper Marlboro, MD) were named to the NEWMAC Baseball All-Conference first and second team respectively, following a vote by the conference head coaches following the regular season. Senior Doug Rives (Bethany, CT) was selected as the Engineers NEWMAC All-Sportsmanship team honoree.
Larson is currently 10th in Division III with 19 doubles, 11th in doubles per game (.50), 11th in home runs (12), 12th in home runs per game (.32), 15th in slugging percentage (.768) and 27th in total bases (106). On the mound, the junior led the NEWMAC with 68 strikeouts and third in wins (6) on the season. After going 10 innings in a critical 18-inning victory at Springfield on the final day of the regular season, Larson struck out 11 in the Engineers NEWMAC tournament opener versus Babson.
Patterson ranks third among NEWMAC student-athletes with 22 stolen bases and a .386 batting average. Three of his 11 doubles were in the home game versus Coast Guard. The junior began the season with a 24-game hitting streak that included 13 of the multi-hit variety and two each in the last five games. The centerfielder scored 40 times and knocked in 27. Patterson also totaled 18 extra base hits including three triples and four home runs.
Baseball concluded its season Monday when it was eliminated from the NEWMAC tournament by nationally-ranked Babson. The NEWMAC West Division champions posted a 23-16 record overall and 8-9 versus all conference teams.
