WORCESTER – WPI senior David Larson (Port Tobacco, MD) has been selected as a preseason first team All-America by D3baseball.com. The first baseman/pitcher earned the first team nod as utility player after picking second team All-America honors by the website after the 2019 season.
Larson enters 2020 after a memorable junior campaign. On the mound, he led the NEWMAC with 68 strikeouts and third in wins (6) on the season. After going 10 innings in a critical 18-inning victory at Springfield on the final day of the regular season, Larson struck out 11 in the Engineers NEWMAC tournament opening win versus Babson, who went on to finish fifth at the NCAA Championship. On the year he posted a 6-1 record with a 2.41 ERA with 68 punch outs in 67.1 innings.
Pitching was only half the story a season ago for the right hander. Offensively, Larson batted .355 with 12 homers, 41 runs batted in and 36 runs scored. His name appeared in multiple places among the Division III statistical leaders including 11th in slugging percentage (.768), home runs per game (0.32) and doubles per game (0.50) while placing 16th in home runs (12) and 19th in doubles (19).
A season ago, Larson was WPI's third D3baaseball.com postseason All-America since the awards program began in 2007 and the first honoree since Alex Venditti in 2016. WPI Hall of Fame pitcher Conor Fahey collected accolades in 2009.
WPI was 23-16 record overall in 2019 and captured the NEWMAC West division for the fourth time in five years. The Engineers begin their 2020 campaign on Sunday, March 8th with a doubleheader versus 2019 Division III World Series participant Washington & Jefferson in the RussMatt Invitational in central Florida.
