Westwood, MA --- WPI's David Larson (Port Tobacco, MD) has been selected as the NEWMAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the week ending Sunday, March 8th. The senior shared top billing in the conference's weekly accolades with Springfield's Jack Cooney (Pittsfield, MA), who was named the league's Player of the Week.
Larson played a huge role as the Engineers kicked off the 2020 season with a pair of low-scoring victories, sweeping a doubleheader against 2019 NCAA Division III World Series participant Washington & Jefferson on Sunday in Winter Haven, Florida. The right-hander tossed six shutout innings for a 0.00 ERA, allowing just two hits and striking out seven, including fanning the side in the third inning.
The returning Al-American utility player proved his versatility by accounting for WPI's lone hit and the game-winning RBI in the contest. Larson also made an impact in the second of the sweep, walking twice and scoring the first run in the 2-0 victory.
The award marks the fourth career NEWMAC weekly honor for Larson. He was the Player of the Week on March 12th, 2018 and took home Co-Player of the Week on March 11th, 2019 and Pitcher of the Week on April 29th, 2019.
Larson and his WPI teammates are back on the field later Monday, taking on Greenville (IN) in a 2:30pm twinbill.
