  • Football Hold Banquet; Honors Seniors and Names 2008 Captains

    Worcester, MA --- The WPI football team officially wrapped up the 2007 season last month as they held their annual postseason banquet on January 25. Senior Mike Butler was honored as the team's most valuable player while freshman Manny Cambra was named as the team's rookie of the year and sophomore Greg Lyons was tabbed as the Engineers Pride Player of the Year.

The recipients on this year’s first team from Liberty League include running back Matt Bielecki (Burnt Hills, NY) of Rochester and wide receiver Brendan McGowan (Mesa, AZ) of Rensselaer.

    Canton, NY - Senior wide receiver Mike O'Donnell caught six passes for 101 yards and senior quarterback Brad Heil completed 26 passes for 366 yards and three touchdowns, as the St. Lawrence University football team celebrated a 24-13 victory over WPI in the 2007 season finale.

    Worcester, MA - Junior quarterback Derek Pope flicked a two-yard touchdown to receiver Nick Macia with no time remaining in the fourth quarter and found Macia again for the game-winning two point conversion as visiting Susquehanna stunned WPI 8-7 on a windy and rain-filled Saturday afternoon.

    Worcester, MA - Nationally ranked Rensselaer rallied from a 14-0 fourth quarter deficit to post a 21-14 double overtime Liberty League football win over host WPI on Saturday afternoon. With the victory RPI, ranked #21 in the latest D3football.com Top 25, improves to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in conference play while WPI slips to 4-4 and 1-4 in Liberty League action.
  • Rochester Defeats WPI Football 42-27

    Rochester, NY - Matt Bielecki (Ballston Lake, NY) and Clarence Onyiriuka (Painted Post, NY) ran for two touchdowns and 95 yards apiece to lead the University of Rochester to a 42-27 victory over visiting Worcester Polytechnic Institute at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
  • Union Defeats WPI 16-3

    Schenectady, NY - The Union defense posted four sacks and held WPI to 227 total yards in a 16-3 victory over the Engineers in Liberty League action Saturday at Frank Bailey Field. The Dutchmen, winners of three straight, improved to 3-0 in Liberty League play and 3-2 overall. The Engineers fell to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the league.

    Worcester, MA - Hobart quarterback Andrew Strom (Novato, CA) completed 25 of 37 passes for 285 yards and three scores to lead the Statesmen to a 45-35 victory over host WPI in Liberty League football action on Saturday afternoon.

    Canton, NY --- Junior defensive back Andrew Sides has been named Liberty League Co-Defensive Performer of the Week after he set the tone defensively for WPI shutting out the US Merchant Marine Academy 35-0 this past Saturday.

    Canton, NY --- Freshman defensive lineman Hal Reader (Bel Air, MD) has been selected Liberty League Co-Rookie of the Week after his three sacks helped lead WPI to a 35-0 victory over the US Merchant Marine Academy.

    Worcester, MA - Junior defensive back Andrew Sides (Acton, MA) and senior linebacker Dustin Bradway (Glastonbury, CT) each returned interceptions for a touchdown to spark WPI to a 35-0 victory over visiting US Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday evening. With the victory, WPI remains undefeated at 4-0 (1-0 Liberty League) while USMMA dips to 0-4 (0-1).

    Worcester, MA --- For the first time in 15 years, the WPI football team is ranked number one in the New England Division III Football Poll. The Engineers edged out Curry, Springfield and Williams in a tightly contested race for the top spot of the season’s inaugural poll conducted by the Wesleyan Sports Information office.

    Worcester, MA - Senior fullback George Chyoghly (Boylston, MA) rushed for a career-high 172 yards and three touchdowns to help host WPI defeat Becker 61-33 in non-conference football action on Saturday afternoon. With the win, WPI is now 3-0 while Becker falls to 0-3.

    Centerville, MA - WPI senior quarterback Rob Pantalone (Camp Hill, PA) has been named ECAC Division III Northwest Player of the Week after accounting for 404 yards of total offense and five touchdowns in a 40-14 win over crosstown rival Worcester State on Friday evening. The award comes on the heels of Pantalone's second consecutive Liberty League Co-Offensive Player of the Week selection.
