  • Football to Host Skills Camp on Sunday July 29th

    Worcester, MA --- The WPI football program will be hosting player skill clinics for students in eight grade and up on Sunday, July 29th. The session will go from noon to 5pm. Registration will begin promptly at 12:00 pm at the main entrance to the stadium on the corner of Institute Road and Park Ave. Registration is $50 per person with a team discount of $40 each for 10 or more players from the same team during Pre-Registration.
  • BROCKTON ENTERPRISE: Middleboro’s Bean excels as rare two-sport college athlete at WPI

    He was a senior at Middleboro High School in search of a college when the interesting idea was proposed. Nick Bean was looking at places such as Northeastern University, UMass-Amherst and Dartmouth College to play Div. 1 baseball when along came Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The Engineers offered Bean the chance to play not only baseball, a sport he earned Enterprise All-Scholastic honors in as an infielder, but also football, where he was a wide receiver.
  • Football to Host Alumni Golf Tournament on June 9th

    Worcester, MA --- The WPI Football Alumni Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, June 9 at the Heritage Country Club in Charlton, MA at 1:00pm. The event will be a shot-gun start featuring prizes, raffles, and a dinner in the evening. Registration begins at noon.
  • Former WPI Football Assistant Joe Philbin Named Miami Dolphins Head Coach
    January 23, 2012
    Joe Philbin has been named the tenth head coach in Miami Dolphins team history, it was announced today by Chairman of the Board/Managing General Partner Stephen Ross and General Manager Jeff Ireland. Philbin joins Miami from the Green Bay Packers, where he originally joined the team on February 10, 2003 as assistant offensive line coach. He was promoted to offensive coordinator on January 15, 2007.
  • Perron Closes Out Football Awards Circuit with All-ECAC Nod

    Centerville, MA --- Defensive back John Perron grabbed perhaps the last WPI football honor to be announced this offseason when he was selected to the ECAC Division III North Region All-Star football team. The senior was named to the second team that featured players from conferences based out of New England and New York. Perron led all Liberty League players with six interceptions. He also added five pass breakups and recovered a pair of fumbles and blocked two kicks.
  • BOSTON GLOBE FEATURE: All-American football honors for Wilmington's Mello at WPI

    Ernie Mello was a jack-of-all-trades performer for the Worcester Polytechnic Institute football team this past season. The senior co-captain rushed for a team-high 931 yards and 11 touchdowns from his tailback position and caught 11 passes for 64 more yards. He returned kickoffs and he blocked kicks, returning two blocks for touchdowns. He was, in the words of coach Chris Robertson, “not the biggest, not the fastest, not the strongest, but the most consistent player we had.’’
  • Mello Selected WPI’s First D3football.com All-America

    Salem, VA --- WPI senior co-captain Ernie Mello was named a first team D3football.com All-America before Friday night’s Division III NCAA championship game between Wisconsin-Whitewater and Mount Union. Mello, who was selected as a specialist, is the program’s first D3football.com All-America in the 13-year history of the website. Mello was one of three All-Americas from the Liberty League and one of six from a New England school.
  • Liberty League Best 23 Football Players Earn Academic All-Conference Honors

    Worcester, MA --- For the second consecutive year, WPI's Football program led the conference in Liberty League All-Academic team honorees. 23 student-athletes made the team, with seniors Andrew Baker, Matt Cyr, Trevor Dunne, Ernie Mello, and Mohamed Yatim all receiving honors for the third consecutive year. Rensselaer and St. Lawrence were both second with 18 honorees.
  • More Hardware for Mello as Four Football Players Tabbed First Team All-Worcester Area

    Worcester, MA --- Ernie Mello was named to the 2011 Worcester Area Football Association's 21st Annual Steve “Merc” Morris All-Star team as the Special Teams Player of the Year. Mello was one of seven Engineers chosen for the team, which is comprised of standouts from the eight collegiate programs in the county. The all-star team has been re-named in memory of Steve “Merc” Morris, the longtime Sports Information Director at Assumption.
  • Mello and Perron Selected to D3football.com All-East Team

    Minneapolis, MN --- The senior duo of Ernie Mello and John Perron have been named to the D3football.com All-East team in balloting by East Region sports information directors and D3football.com staff. Mello earned first team specialist honors while Perron took home second team defensive back accolades. The pair was chosen from 251 nominations by Division III member schools. A total of 78 players were tabbed to the three teams and will now be under consideration for All-America status.
  • Perron Named to New England Football Writers Division II/III All-New England Team

    Boston, MA --- WPI defensive back John Perron has been selected to the Division II/III All-New England Football team as voted on by the New England Football Writers. The senior co-captain was one of just 28 players representing 20 teams in the region, and marks the second straight season and fifth time in the last six years the Crimson and Gray were represented on the squad. Perron led all Liberty League players with six interceptions this past fall, including a pair in WPI's Transit Trophy victory over RPI.
  • Mello Headlines Football's All-Liberty League Award Winners

    Clifton Park, NY --- Ernie Mello was named Liberty League Football Special Teams Player of the Year in voting by the conference’s coaches announced today. The senior also took home first team accolades as both a running back and return specialist. Joining Mello on the first team were defensive lineman Peter Gill, defensive back John Perron and fullback Manny Cambra. Two other players took home second honors and four earned honorable mention nods.
  • Football Places Region Best Four on Capital One Academic All-District Team

    Worcester, MA --- Seniors Ernie Mello and Matt Cyr and junior Joe Everett and William Alves have been named to the Capital One Division III Academic All-District I Football team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA). The four earned first team honors in District I, which is comprised of Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, and advances to the national ballot for All-America consideration. The Engineers and MIT shared Division III District-I high honors with four selections each.
  • Football's Rally Falls Short Against St. Lawrence

    Worcester, MA --- Marcus Washington ran for 187 on 38 carries with two touchdowns as the visiting Saints of St. Lawrence defeated the host Engineers of WPI, 21-14 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field in Worcester. St. Lawrence wraps up its season at 3-6 with an 2-4 record in the Liberty League conference. WPI ends its 2011 campaign at 2-7 with a 1-5 mark in the conference standings. Washington’s performance gave him over a thousand rushing yards on the season. Zach Migliore threw for 36 yards and ran for another 24 for SLU.
  • WPI Weekly Athletics Update #9

    Women's Soccer's Megan Forti and Football's Manny Cambra have been named WPI Athletes of the Week. Forti scored a goal and assisted on three others in the snowy 7-0 win over Becker. The sophomore leads the Engineers with 10 points. Cambra collected a pair of interceptions in his first defensive appearance of the season. Offensively, the senior caught six passes for 43 yards and amassed 122 all-purpose yards on Saturday.
  • Football Falls in the Snow 27-13 to Nationally-Ranked Hobart

    Worcester, MA --- Nationally-ranked Hobart registered a pair of touchdowns in the opening five minutes and dodged heavy snowfall in the second half en route to a 27-13 victory over host WPI Saturday in a Liberty League football contest. The Statesman, ranked No. 25 in the latest D3football.com Top 25, remains perfect on the season at 6-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play. Manny Cambra, who played both running back and cornerback, completed his busy day with a game-best six catches for 43 yards to go along with his two interceptions for the Engineers.
  • Second Half Rally Propels Rochester By Football

    Rochester, NY --- Clarence Onyiriuka ran for 158 yards and three touchdowns to lead the University of Rochester to a 28-21 victory over Worcester Polytechnic Institute at Edwin Fauver Stadium here today. WPI quarterback Johny Antonopoulos passed for 169 yards and two touchdowns. He threw a three-yard TD pass to Nick Bean and a 12-yarder to Josh Less late in the third quarter. The TD to Bean put the Engineers ahead, 7-0. The scoring pass to Less opened a 21-13 lead. WPI is 2-5, 1-3 in the Liberty League.

    WORCESTER -- Hand Ernie Mello a football and he relies on instinct and tenacity to carve out yardage against the most menacing of defenses. So when Mello heard what sounded like an explosion while hanging out in front of a Worcester Polytechnic Institute dorm with friends during the spring of his freshman year, he instinctively took off in full gallop in the direction of the piercing noise.

    Volleyball's Kerrin Beovich and Football's Johny Antonopoulos have been tabbed as WPI Athletes of the Week. Beovich notched double-digit kills in a sweep of Framingham State and Eastern Nazarene on Saturday. The junior narrowly missed a double-double against the Rams as she registered nine digs. Antonopoulos tossed for career-highs of 285 yards and four touchdowns in the 34-27 defeat versus Merchant Marine.

    Worcester- MA --- Led by quarterback Alex Coviello's 243 rushing yards, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy defeated host WPI, 34-27, Saturday evening at Alumni Field in Worcester. Merchant Marine is now 2-4 with a 1-1 mark in the Liberty standings while WPI drops to 2-4 with a 1-2 conference record.   • Last-Second Field Goal Dooms Football at Union

    Schenectady, NY --- Senior kicker Adam Henry made a 22 yard field goal as time expired in regulation to lift Union to a 34-31 football victory over WPI at Frank Bailey Field Saturday. The Dutchmen are now 2-0 in the league and 2-3 overall while the Engineers fell to 1-1 in league play and 2-3 overall. Ernie Mello rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns, and also recovered a blocked punt in the Union endzone for the first score of the day. Nick Chambers posted two sacks for the Engineers
  • Perron Earns ECAC North Defensive Player of the Week Honor

    Worcester, MA --- WPI defensive back John Perron has been named ECAC Division III North Defensive Player of the Week for games played on Saturday, September 24th. The senior captain becomes the first Crimson and Gray player to take home a weekly ECAC award since Justin Wells was selected Northwest Offensive Player of the Week in October of 2008. Earlier in the week, Perron was also named Liberty League Defensive Performer of the Week.

    Clifton Park, NY --- WPI senior John Perron (Worcester, MA) has been chosen as the Liberty League Defensive Performer of the Week award winner for games played on Saturday, September 24th. Perron spearheaded a defense that forced five turnovers as WPI knocked off Rensselaer 34-31, helping Worcester’s Engineers take home the Transit Trophy and notch consecutive victories in the series for the first time since 1995 and 1996.

    Women's Cross Country's Vickey Hewey and Football's Ernie Mello were named WPI Athletes of the Week. Hewey claimed her third Worcester City Championship to help the team win for the fourth consecutive year. Mello rushed for 166 yards and four touchdowns on Homecoming and was key in helping WPI retain the Transit Trophy for another year.

    WPI defensiive back John Perron will appear on the internet radio show "In The HuddLLe", tonight at 8:25pm. "In The HuddLLe", is the weekly Liberty League recap show hosted by James Baker, Eric Ren and Frank Rossi. It is heard every Sunday from 7:30pm to 9:30pm. Perron will discuss WPI's big win Saturday over Rensselaer in the Transit Trophy game and look ahead to next weekend's big matchup at Union.
  • Mello's Four Touchdowns Helps Football Keep the Transit Trophy in Worcester

    Worcester, MA --- Ernie Mello rushed for 166 yards and four touchdowns and the WPI defense forced five turnovers as the hosts held off a furious fourth quarter rally to defeat Rensselaer 34-31 in the annual Transit Trophy rivalry game between the two schools. WPI levels its record at 2-2 and opens Liberty League play at 1-0. Coupled with last year’s 24-10 win in Troy, Worcester’s Engineers have now won consecutive games in the series for the first time since 1995 and 1996.

    This Saturday at 1pm, the 105th gridiron meeting between rivals WPI and Rensselaer will take place in Worcester as part of Homecomeing Weekend. RPI enjoys a 55-44-5 advantage in the series, but in 2010, WPI took home the Trophy for the first time since 1996 with a 24-10 victory in Troy.

    The WPI Athletic Department, Poly Club, and Hall of Fame Selection Committee is proud to announce its 29th Class, the Class of 2011. The seven newest members were inducted on Friday, September 23, 2011 as part of Homecoming Weekend. They include: John Maxouris (’76), Miguel Concepcion (’05), Matt Wassell (’95), Matthew Musiak (’04), Kim (Cloutier) Villa (’90), Jeffrey Horowitz (’85) and Michele (Giard) Hanly (’82)
  • Gill Named to D3football.com Team of the Week

    Worcester, MA --- WPI defensive lineman Peter Gill has been selected to the D3football.com Team of the Week presented by Scoutware for game played on Saturday, September 17th. The senior becomes the first Engineer to win the award since Stefan Nicotra turned the trick during the opening weekend of the 2008 season. Gill amassed four sacks in WPI's 31-3 win at Becker. He had 10 tackles, including five tackles for loss totaling 28 yards. Gill's performance highlighted an eight-sack outing from the WPI defense.
  • Mello Honored as Liberty League Co-Offensive Performer of the Week

    Worcester, MA --- WPI running back Ernie Mello has been chosen Liberty League Co-Offensive Performer of the Week for games played on Saturday, September 17th. The senior captain shares the award with Rensselaer junior quarterback Mike Hermann Mello ran for 96 yards on 21 carries and scored three touchdowns in WPI’s 31-3 win against Becker.
