  • Football Skills Camp Scheduled for Sunday July 27th
    May 15, 2014
    Worcester, MA --- The WPI football program will be hosting player skill clinics for students in eight grade and up on Sunday, July 27th. The session will go from noon to 5pm. Registration will begin promptly at 12:00 pm at the entrance to the Sports and Recreation Center on the Quad of main campus. Registration is $50 per person with a team discount of $40 each for 10 or more players from the same team during Pre-Registration.
  • Football to Host Alumni Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 7th

    Worcester, MA --- The 2014 WPI Football Alumni Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, June 7 at the Heritage Country Club in Charlton, MA at 1:00pm. The event will be a shot-gun start featuring prizes, raffles, and a dinner in the evening. Registration begins at noon. In addition to our alumni and friends, we are inviting members of our rising senior class and their families to network with our alumni at the event.
  • Worcester Polytechnic Institute Names Laurie Leshin as its 16th President

    Worcester, MA --- After a six-month intensive search, the Board of Trustees of Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) has elected Laurie Leshin, PhD, as the university's 16th president. Over the past 20 years, Leshin, a geochemist and space scientist, established herself as both an academic and administrative leader, having cultivated an impressive career at NASA, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Arizona State University (ASU), and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Leshin was selected to lead WPI from an initial candidate pool of approximately 200.

  • Grupp Adds D3football.com All-East Team Honor to Resume

    Minneapolis, MN --- WPI offensive lineman Tim Grupp has been selected to the D3football.com All-East team in balloting by East Region sports information directors and D3football.com staff. Grupp, a third team tackle, is the first Engineer selected to the since Ernie Mello and John Perron received the accolade in 2011. Grupp was picked from 284 nominations by Division III member schools. A total of 77 players were tabbed to the three teams and will now be under consideration for All-America status.
  • Grupp, Grasis and Murphy Draw First Team All-Worcester Football Honors

    Worcester, MA --- The Worcester Area Football Association has announced the 23rd Annual Steve “Merc” Morris All-Star Team as selected by the eight sports information directors of Worcester County. WPI was well represented with senior offensive lineman Tim Grupp, junior running back Zach Grasis and sophomore defensive back Sean Murphy named to the first team while four others were selected to the second team. The team is named in memory of Steve "Merc" Morris, the longtime Assistant Director of Athletics for Media Relations and Assumption Hall of Famer.
  • Football's Grupp to Receive Prestigious Nils V. "Swede" Nelson Award

    Boston, MA --- Gridiron Club of Greater Boston president Bob Norton has announced the major award recipients for the annual banquet to be held January 9 at Westin Waltham. Among the recipients is WPI senior offensive tackle Tim Grupp who is the Division II/III winner of the Nils V. “Swede” Nelson Award for exceptional achievement in sportsmanship, academics, and athletics. Grupp will be honored with University of Massachusetts defensive back Devin Brown from the Bowl/Championship Division.
  • Hamdan Tabbed a Football Academic All-American

    Worcester, MA --- WPI student-athlete Ehab Hamdan has been selected as a Capital One Division III Football All-America by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA). The senior wide receiver earned second team honors and joins Aaron Champagne (2009 and 2010) as the only WPI football players to be named Academic All-America. Hamdan becomes the 25th different Crimson and Gray student-athlete to earn Academic All-America accolades and it marks the 50th time an Engineer has been honored.
  • Football's Grupp Honored as Top Air Force ROTC Cadet in the Northeast

    Tim Grupp, a senior at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), has received the Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Achievement, which recognizes him as the top Air Force ROTC cadet in the Northeast among those nominated for the award. "This is an incredible honor,” said Grupp, 21, a resident of Highland Mills, N.Y., who is majoring in mechanical engineering with a concentration in astronautics. “My parents have always taught me to do what I love and to do it to the best of my ability. This recognition is truly humbling.”
  • Grupp, Grasis & Tavernelli Earn First Team All-Liberty League Football Honors

    Troy, NY --- Senior Tim Grupp, junior Zach Grasis and sophomore Vinny Tavernelli headline a list of seven WPI football players to receive recognition from the Liberty League as all-conference teams were announced on Tuesday. The trio was named to the conference’s first team while senior Ehab Hamdan and sophomore Sean Murphy were selected to the second team and junior Ryan Mathie and sophomore Eric Lacroix drew honorable mention accolades.
  • Football Closes Out Season With 35-21 Road Loss at Springfield

    Springfield, MA --- Led by sophomore quarterback Jonathan Marrero with 17 carries for 131 yards, the Springfield College Football team defeated WPI 35-21 on Senior Day, in Liberty League Football action on Saturday afternoon at Amos Alonzo Stagg Field. With the win, Springfield improves to 6-3 overall, and 3-3 in conference, while the Engineers fall to 3-7 overall, and 2-5 in the Liberty League. Senior John Antonopolous ended his career by passing for 212 yards and running 82. The senior pulled the rare feat of rushing, passing and receiving a touchdown in the game.
  • Murphy Adds ECAC Division III Northwest Weekly Accolade to Resume

    Centerville, MA --- Sophomore Sean Murphy has been selected as the Corvias ECAC Division III Northwest Co-Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, November 10, 2013. The defensive back was named the Liberty League’s Football Defensive Performer of the Week on Monday.
  • Grasis and Murphy Claim Liberty League Football Weekly Honors

    Troy, NY --- WPI junior Zach Grasis and sophomore Sean Murphy have claimed Liberty League Football weekly awards for their performance against Rochester on Saturday. Grasis was named the Offensive Performer of the Week while Murphy was tabbed the Defensive Performer of the Week Grasis rushed 22 times for 155 yards and a pair of touchdown while Murphy had a hand in a pair of second half Rochester turnovers in the red zone.
  • WPI Athletes of the Week #11

    Football's Sean Murphy and Women's Swimming and Diving's Emily Martin were named WPI Student-Athletes of the Week. Murphy had a hand in a pair of Rochester turnovers in the Engineers 31-21 win over Rochester and Martin claimed a pair of individual victories to go with a pair of relay wins in a sweep of Babson, Brandeis and Smith on Saturday.
  • Football’s Kilfoil to Appear on the Internet Radio Show "In The HuddLLe" Tonight

    WPI senior co-captain John Kilfoil will be interviewed on the internet radio show "In The HuddLLe", tonight around 8:10pm. "In The HuddLLe", is the weekly Liberty League recap show hosted by James Baker and Frank Rossi. It is heard every Sunday from 7:30pm to 9:30pm. Kilfoil anchored a WPI defense that forced five Rochester turnovers as the Engineers defeated the visiting Yellowjackets 31-21 on Senior Day Saturday afternoon. The senior defensive lineman notched three solo stops, including a tackle-for-loss, and a quarterback hurry.
  • Antonopoulos, Grasis and Defense Help Football Surprise Rochester

    Worcester, MA --- John Antonopoulos tossed two touchdowns, Zach Grasis ran for two more scores and the WPI defense forced five Rochester turnovers as the Engineers defeated the visiting Yellowjackets on Senior Day 31-21 in a Liberty League football contest played Saturday afternoon. The win pushes WPI’s record to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in conference play. Rochester, who had entered the contest with a three-game winning streak and a chance to claim the Liberty League’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, dips to 5-3 on the year and 3-2 in league play.
  • Football Tops the Liberty League with 30 Academic All-Conference Honorees

    Troy, NY --- For the fourth straight year, the WPI football program once again paces the Liberty League in All-Academic selections. The Engineers placed an impressive 30 student-athletes on the team for a second consecutive season. Rochester has the second most with 20 honorees while Springfield was third with 16 award winners. Being tabbed for the third time were seniors John Antonopoulos, Tim Granger, Tim Grupp, Ehab Hamdan, Paul Monahan, Trev Rancourt and Alex Verrelli.
  • Hamdan, Grupp and Monahan Land on CoSIDA Academic All-District I Football Team

    Worcester, MA --- WPI senior football players Ehab Hamdan, Tim Grupp and Paul Monahan have been selected to the Capital One Division III Academic All-District I team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA). The trio earned first team accolades in District I, which is comprised of Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, and advances to the national ballot for All-America consideration.
  • Football Tripped Up At St. Lawrence

    Canton, NY --- Senior quarterback Zane Fish passed for a career-high four touchdowns and the Saints’ defense had five takeaways, as the St. Lawrence University football team defeated WPI by the score of 32-15 at Leckonby Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
  • WPI Athletes of the Week #9

    Football's Ryan Mathie and Field Hockey's Grace Davis were named WPI Student-Athletes of the Week. Mathie recorded a game-high 11 tackles, including seven solo, against Merchant Marine and Davis forced overtime with a goal in the 66th minute at Wheaton.
  • Football Drops 26-14 Home Decision to US Merchant Marine

    Worcester, MA --- Quarterback Matthew McDaniels and running back Zachary Boucher combined to rush for 240 yards and three touchdowns to propel visiting US Merchant Marine Academy to a 26-14 victory over WPI in a Liberty League football contest played on Saturday. Merchant Marine, who was playing for the first time in October because of the government, improves to 4-1 on the season and 1-1 in conference action. WPI is now 2-5 overall and 1-3 in Liberty League play.
  • EAGLE TRIBUNE - Under the Lights: Methuen's Lacroix starring at WPI

    Secretary of Defense - WPI sophomore safety Eric Lacroix of Methuen recently was named co-Defensive Player of the Week by the Liberty League and ECAC Northwest. In a win over RPI, Lacroix, despite playing with a broken thumb, had eight tackles and forced a fumble, and had a 33-yard interception return. Through six games he had a team-high 44 tackles with two interceptions.
  • Football Dealt Setback on the Road at Union

    Schenectady, NY --- Junior quarterback Connor Eck was 12 for 18 with two touchdowns to lead the Union College football team to a 35-6 win over Worcester Polytechnic Institute at Frank Bailey Field Saturday. The Dutchmen, playing in front of 2,114 in their Homecoming game, improved to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the Liberty League while the Engineers now stand 2-4 overall and 1-2 in league. WPI is idle next week and is scheduled to host the Merchant Marine Academy on October 26 at 3pm.
  • Football Suffers First Liberty League Loss at Nationally-Ranked Hobart

    Geneva, NY --- The nationally-ranked Hobart football team produced a season-high 501 yards of offense and scored 41 unanswered points on the way to a 41-7 Liberty League win over WPI on Boswell Field this afternoon. WPI got 93 rushing yards from junior running back Zach Grasis and 113 yards passing and a TD from senior backup quarterback John Antonopoulos. Brian Murtagh, Robert Harasimowicz, Jack Downey and Sean Murphy each recorded a game-high six tackles.
  • Grupp National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award Nominee

    Dallas, TX --- Senior offensive lineman Tim Grupp has been named as a nominee for the 2013 National Football Foundation (NFF) National Scholar-Athlete Awards, presented by Fidelity Investments.®, and a semifinalist for the 2013 William V. Campbell Trophy, endowed by HealthSouth, which recognizes an individual as the absolute best scholar-athlete in the nation. The 170-nominee pool contains 39 student-athletes from Division III and includes John Moriarty from Massachusetts Maritime and Michael Green from Liberty League foe Hobart.
  • Lacroix Collects ECAC Football Co-Defensive Player of the Week Accolades

    Centerville, MA --- WPI sophomore safety Eric Lacroix has been named the Corvias ECAC Division III Football Northwest Co-Defensive Player of the Week. Lacroix was previously tabbed the Liberty League Football Co-Defensive Performer of the Week, as announced on Monday. Both honors were shared with senior Tony Ortega from Rochester.

    Troy, NY --- Sophomore Eric Lacroix was selected as the Liberty League Football Co-Defensive Performer of the Week for the week ending Sunday, September 29, 2013. He shares the accolade with Tony Ortega from Rochester. Junior Zach Grasis was named to the honor roll for the second time this season.
  • WPI Athletes of the Week #5

    Field Hockey's Lauren Puishys and Football's Ehab Hamdan were named WPI Athletes of the Week. Puishys recorded career high saves against Nichols and more than doubled that on Saturday against No. 17 MIT while Hamdan hauled in his sixth touchdown of the season to go with 117 yards in a 27-14 win over RPI as the team reclaimed the Transit Trophy for the third time in four years.

Grupp anchored an offensive line that paved the way for 181 yards of rushing and 365 yards of total offense as WPI won the Transit Trophy for the third time in four years as the Crimson and Gray defeated visiting RPI 27-14.
