    WORCESTER — Bill Gibbons Sr. was a freshman at Clark when athletic director Russ Granger asked him if he would like to help out with the Clark Tournament, the area’s eminent high school boys’ basketball tourney that was then in its 15th year. Gibbons’ first tasks included bringing oranges and towels to the players’ lockers in old Alumni Gym at halftime and after the games.

  • Seven from Football Named to 25th annual Steve “Merc” Morris All-Star Team

    WORCESTER – Seven WPI student-athletes were named to the 25th annual Steve “Merc” Morris All-Star Team, as selected by the eight sports information directors of Worcester County who sponsor football. Senior Zach Grasis (East Brookfield, MA), junior Brian Murtagh (Wayland, MA), junior Chad DellaPorta (Billerica, MA), and sophomore Dereck Pacheco (Barnstable, MA) earned first team honors while seniors Eric Lacroix (Methuen, MA), Peter Salem (Dracut, MA) and Cory Stirling (Easton, CT) landed on the second team. All seven were among the Liberty League selections announced last month.
  • Murphy Set to Represent Football at DIII Senior Classic on Saturday

    WORCESTER – WPI senior Sean Murphy (Mattapoisett, MA) will be heading to Doug Shaw Stadium in Myrtle Beach, SC to play in the 2015 DIII Senior Classic on December 19. The game is slated for a 12:30pm kickoff.
  • Murtagh Tackles D3football.com All-East Region Honors

    WORCESTER – WPI junior Brian Murtagh (Wayland, MA) was named to the D3football.com All-East Region Third Team. He is the eighth Engineer to be recognized in the 11-year history of the award, and fifth under Head Coach Chris Robertson, joining Tim Grupp ‘14 in 2013, Ernie Mello ‘12 and John Perron ‘12 in 2011 and Tyler Lapierre ’11 in 2010.
  • Football Falls to Kean in ECAC Presidents Bowl

    New Britain, CT --- The Kean defense forced four turnovers and limited the WPI offense to 68 yards of offensive in the first half as the Cougars defeated the Engineers 24-6 in the ECAC Presidents Bowl at Central Connecticut State University’s Arute Field on Friday night.
  • Program-Best Eleven From Football Receive Liberty League All-Conference Accolades

    Troy, NY --- Led by senior Zach Grasis (East Brookfield, MA), a unanimous first team selection, and juniors Chad DellaPorta (Billerica, MA), Brian Murtagh (Wayland, MA) and Blaine Bursey (Middleburg, FL), 11 members of the WPI football team were named All-Liberty League following a vote by the conference head coaches. Grasis was one of six consensus selections across the league, of which two were on offense.
  • WPI Tabbed to Play Kean Friday Night in ECAC Presidents Bowl

    Danbury, CT --- For the first time in 23 years the WPI football team has earned a postseason bid. The Engineers have been selected to play in the ECAC Presidents Bowl where they will face Kean (NJ) on Friday at 8pm at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain.
  • Football Closes Out Regular Season by Grinding Out 19-17 Road Win at Springfield

    Springfield, MA --- Senior Zach Grasis’ second touchdown of the day proved to be the game-winner as visiting WPI withstood a late Springfield drive and defeated the Pride 19-17 in Liberty League football action on a windy Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.

    WORCESTER -- Junior Kevin Lynch (East Bridgewater, MA) was joined by sophomore Dereck Pacheco (Barnstable, MA) on the CoSIDA Division III Academic All-District I Football Team as selected by member sports information directors from Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.
  • Eckler, Domond and Malafronte Take Top Billing in Liberty League Weekly Awards

    Troy, NY --- Junior Dan Eckler and freshmen Alex Domond and Sam Malafronte all received weekly football awards from Liberty League on Monday following WPI’s 35-34 triumph over Rochester this past weekend. It makes the most Crimson and Gray to be honored in a single week since Justin Wells, Stefan Nicotra and Mike Egan (two awards) all pocketed weekly accolades after the Engineers defeated UMass Dartmouth in five overtimes to open the 2008 season.
  • Domond and Defensive Stand Key Football's Dramatic Victory Over Rochester

    WORCESTER –Alex Domond returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown with 1:13 remaining to put WPI ahead and the Engineers stuffed a two-point conversion rush attempt with 27 seconds left as Crimson and Gray celebrated Senior Day with a pulsating, 35-34 victory over visiting Rochester on Saturday afternoon.

    Canton, NY --- St. Lawrence quarterback Mike Lefflbine tossed three touchdowns and ran for another while the Saints defense forced six turnovers, including five interceptions, as the hosts defeated visiting WPI 42-21 in a Liberty League football contest played on Saturday afternoon.
  • Quick Start Powers Football by Merchant Marine in Liberty League Tilt

    WORCESTER – Dan Eckler and Brandon Eccher connected twice for touchdowns in the first quarter as WPI jumped out to a 24-0 lead after four possessions in a 38-8 victory over visiting Merchant Marine in a Liberty League football matchup Friday night at Alumni Stadium.

  • Grasis and Eccher Rally Football Past Union 29-21

    Schenectady, NY --- Zach Grasis ran for 168 yards and a touchdown to lead visiting WPI to a 29-21 victory over Union at Frank Bailey Field Saturday. The Engineers improved to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the league while the Dutchmen fell to 0-6 and 0-3 in the Liberty League.
  • Fast Start by No. 25 Hobart Too Much for Football

    Geneva, NY --- A slow start doomed the WPI football team on Saturday as the Engineers fell on the road to nationally-ranked Hobart 37-7. WPI is now 3-2 on the season and 0-2 in Liberty League play while the Statesmen, ranked 25th in the latest D3football.com Top 25, improve to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in conference action.
  • Football's Bursey Draws Recognition from Fred Mitchell Award

    WORCESTER -- WPI junior Blaine Bursey is among 21 place kickers who have been recognized by the Fred Mitchell Award committee for their achievements on the football field and in the community during the month of September. The honorees represent five different college divisions nationally - NCAA FBS (4), NCAA II (6), NCAA III (7), NAIA (3) and NJCAA (1).
  • NEWMAC Adds Eighth Football Member Catholic University

    BOSTON -- The New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) is pleased to announce the addition of The Catholic University of America as an associate member in the sport of football effective July 1, 2017. In April, the conference office released it would begin sponsoring the sport of football starting in the 2017 season. The addition of Catholic gives the conference its eighth member heading into the inaugural season. Football will be the conference's 20th championship and ninth for men.
  • Football's Second Half Rally Comes Up Short In Transit Trophy Game Versus RPI

    WORCESTER – Senior running back Zach Grasis (East Brookfield, MA) ran for 75 yards and two second-half touchdowns, but the WPI Engineers fell at home during Homecoming to the RPI Engineers 28-21 at Alumni Stadium in a battle for the Transit Trophy and the Liberty League opener for both teams.
  • WPI and RPI Football Set to Participate in "Coach to Cure MD" on Saturday

    Waco, TX --- For the eighth year in a row, football coaches nationwide will band together for the Coach to Cure MD program, which will be held during games on Saturday, September 26. The annual effort has raised more than $1.25 million to battle Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
  • Football Set to Face RPI for the Transit Trophy - What is the Transit Trophy?

    The 109th football meeting between rivals WPI and Rensselaer will take place Saturday afternoon in Worcester as part of Homecoming Weekend. RPI enjoys a 57-46-5 advantage in the series, including a 27-6 victory last season in Troy but WPI has won three of the last five meetings. The coveted Transit Trophy will be on the line. RPI sports a 23-11-1 mark since the trophy was first awarded in 1980. Read below for more information on this unique college football trophy.
  • Pacheco Adds D3football.com, ECAC Weekly Accolades to Collection

    Minneapolis, MN – WPI sophomore Dereck Pacheco (Barnstable, MA) has added D3football.com Team of the Week, as well as ECAC Division III North Defensive Player of the Week honors, to his collection of weekly awards. The defensive lineman was previously named the Liberty League Football Defensive Performer of the Week and WPI Men’s Student-Athlete of the Week.

    Troy, NY – WPI sophomore Dereck Pacheco (Barnstable, MA) has been named the Liberty League Football Defensive Performer of the Week while junior Blaine Bursey (Middleburg, FL) claimed Liberty League Special Teams Performer of the Week status for the second time this season. Senior Dan Eckler (Stoughton, MA) was placed on the honor roll.
  • Defense and Eckler Help Football Sack Norwich 27-10 to Move to 3-0 for First Time Since 2009

    WORCESTER – Junior Dan Eckler threw for 206 yards and 3 TDs and ran for another 60 yards on 10 carries to lead the WPI Engineers past the visiting Norwich Cadets at Alumni Stadium. The Engineers improve to 3-0 for the first time since 2009 and will open Liberty League action vs. RPI during homecoming at 1 p.m. Sept. 26. The Cadets fell to 0-3 and will host Becker to open Eastern Collegiate Football Conference play at 2 p.m. Oct. 3.

    WORCESTER --- The WPI Athletic Department, Poly Club, and Hall of Fame Selection Committee will be inducting its 33rd class as part of Homecoming Weekend on Friday, September 25th. The class includes: Tom Bartolomei '91 (Men’s Basketball), Conor Fahey '09 (Baseball), Brian Glatz '90 (Wrestling), Swang Lee-Aphon '61 (Men’s Soccer and Tennis), Nicole Maglione '09 (Field Hockey and Softball) and Donna (Underwood) Sullivan '93 (Field Hockey and Softball).   • Eckler and Eccher Electric as Football Knocks Off Worcester State 27-13

    WORCESTER – WPI quarterback Dan Eckler passed for 381 yards, including a 96-yard touchdown strike as Football earned its first victory over Worcester State in five years with a 27-13 triumph on Friday night at John F. Coughlin Stadium. The Crimson and Gray are now 2-0 for the first time since 2009.

    WORCESTER --- Injuries have disrupted Zach Grasis’ college football career, but every tear and fracture has only motivated the WPI running back more. “I just always sit back and I’m like, ‘What do I want?’” Grasis said before a recent practice at Alumni Stadium, “and there’s nothing I want to do more than play football.”
