    WORCESTER ― Spencer Herrington (Clearfield, PA) connected on two fourth-quarter field goals in adverse conditions — one from 41 yards and one from 31 — with less than six minutes left, and Julian Nyland (Melrose, MA) connected with Nic Rossi (Howell, NJ) for a 19-yard touchdown in the second quarter, and WPI defeated MIT, 13-6, on Homecoming at Alumni Stadium.
  • Herrington Named Special Teams Player of the Year; 11 Honored as All-Worcester Area

    WORCESTER – WPI senior Spencer Herrington (Clearfield, PA) was named as the Worcester Area Football Association’s Special Teams Player of the Year and was joined by 10 fellow Engineers on the 28th Annual Steve “Merc” Morris All-Star Team. Selections were made by the sports information directors from the eight colleges and universities that sponsor the sport in Worcester County, including Division I Holy Cross and Division II Assumption.

    Cambridge, MA --- WPI senior offensive lineman Nick Day (Northampton, MA) has been named to the 2018 New England Football Writers Division II/III All-New England team.
  • Five From Football Recognized as Day Repeats as Google Cloud Academic All-District

    WORCESTER – For the second consecutive year, WPI senior offensive lineman Nick Day (Northampton, MA) has been selected as a member of the Google Cloud Football Academic All-District I team, as voted upon by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) members from Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. He is joined this year by senior wide receiver Erik Fyrer (Ipswich, MA), senior place kicker Spencer Herrington (Clearfield, PA), junior linebacker Nick Ostrowski (Charlton, MA) and sophomore defensive lineman Lou Duh (Monroe, CT). All five advance to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. WPI and MIT shared the lead with five each to go with three from Springfield for a NEWMAC total of 13.

    Westwood, MA --- Senior placekicker Spencer Herrington (Clearfield, PA) repeated as the NEWMAC Special Teams Athlete of the Year while 10 others also earned All-NEWMAC honors as voted upon by the league’s head coaches following the regular season. Senior Larry Cafaro (Ansonia, CT) was named to the NEWMAC All-Sportsmanship team.

  • Football Holds off Norwich to Conclude Fourth Consecutive Winning Season

    WORCESTER -- Senior Blayne Merchant (Sanderson, FL) and junior Julian Nyland (Melrose, MA) scored on 50-plus yard plays and senior Spencer Herrington (Clearfield, PA) kicked a career-long 42-yard field goal as WPI held off Norwich, 20-17, Saturday afternoon in the season finales for both teams in Alumni Stadium.
  • 72 WPI Fall Student-Athletes Earn NEWMAC Academic All-Conference Honors

    Westwood, MA --- Led by seven three-time honorees, WPI placed 72 fall student-athletes on their respective NEWMAC Academic All-Conference teams. Football led the department with 21 selections while Volleyball boasted a NEWMAC-best nine. Men’s Soccer boasted 11, followed by Women’s Soccer (9) and Field Hockey (8). Women’s Cross Country once again tied its program record with eight and Men’s Cross Country produced six.
  • Football Stymied by Coast Guard 24-10 in NEWMAC Road Contest

    New London, CT --- Quarterback Ryan Jones (Punxsutawney, PA) tossed a pair of touchdowns and ran for another as Coast Guard defeating visiting WPI 24-10 in a NEWMAC football contest played on Saturday afternoon.

    The 2015 Abington High School graduates have been defensive leaders at Worcester Polytechnic Institute during their careers. Cerasani’s senior season came to an end last month due to a knee injury.

    Bloomington, MN --- WPI senior Spencer Herrington (Clearfield, PA) has earned a spot on the D3football.com Team of the Week for his performance in Saturday’s 13-6 triumph over previously unbeaten MIT. The kicker was recognized by the NEWMAC and Noontime Sports on Monday.

Herrington was once again lauded by Noontime Sports and Ostrowski was tabbed as the WPI Men’s Student Athlete of the Week earlier in the day.

  • Second Half Merchant Marine Rally Sinks Football in NEWMAC Road Contest

    Kings Point, NY -- Quarterback Krystian Abbott’s rushing touchdown with 38 seconds remaining and Gavin Gartner’s subsequent PAT helped cap a furious Merchant Marine rally as the host Mariners rallied from a 24-0 halftime deficit to defeat WPI 25-24 in a NEWMAC football contest played Saturday afternoon.

    Castine, ME --- Sean McAllen (Prospect, CT) ran for 131 yards and a pair of touchdowns, Spencer Herrington (Clearfield, PA) booted three field goals and the WPI defense did not allow a point for the first 58:49 of the game as the Engineers went on the road and defeated Maine Maritime in a NEWMAC football contest played Saturday afternoon.
  • Springfield Spoils WPI’s Home Opener to Begin Year Two of NEWMAC Football

    WORCESTER – Junior Hunter Belzo (Middletown, CT) rushed for 113 yards and two touchdowns, and threw for another, as Springfield emerged with a 17-14 victory over host WPI in a Saturday afternoon NEWMAC Football showdown in Alumni Stadium.

    Leicester, MA -- Sean McAllen rushed for 160 yards on just 16 carries with three touchdowns and caught three passes for 25 yards and a score as WPI went on road and shutout Becker 45-0 in its final non-conference game of the 2018 regular season on Saturday afternoon. 
  • Comeback Falls Short as Football Drops 25-14 Decision to No. 24 RPI in Transit Trophy Game

    Troy, NY --- Sophomore wide receiver Nick Smith caught the first two passes of his career - both touchdowns - and the RPI defense intercepted four passes, including one returned for a touchdown, as the No. 24 Engineers defeated WPI, 25-14, in the Transit Trophy Game at East Campus Stadium. RPI improves to 2-0 on the season and 26-12-1 in Transit Trophy games, including each of the last two seasons and four of the last five. WPI is now 1-1 in 2018.
  • Football Set to Face RPI for the Transit Trophy - What is the Transit Trophy?

    The 112th meeting between WPI and RPI is set for Saturday at noon in Troy, NY. The hosts, who won their 25th Transit Trophy game last year, enjoy a 59-47-5 advantage in the series. WPI has won four of eight Transit Trophies games under eighth year head coach Chris Robertson. RPI sports a 25-12-1 mark since the trophy was first awarded in 1980.
