Westwood, MA --- WPI senior Blayne Merchant (Sanderson, FL) has been named as the NEWMAC Football Defensive Athlete of the Week, as announced Tuesday afternoon. The linebacker had been previously recognized as one of the Noontime Sports Stars of the Week, as revealed on Monday.

Merchant shared game-high honors of eight tackles, including seven solo, with two for-loss and a sack as the Engineers collected its third shutout of the season, and sixth in 17 games dating back to the beginning of the 2017 campaign, with a 24-0 home win versus Catholic on Saturday. He also logged a QB hurry in the effort.

It marks the program's third weekly accolade for the Engineers this season with Spencer Herrington earning special teams honors in week 1 and Sean McAllen earning offensive recognition in week 3. It is also the first defensive selection since Dereck Pacheco was lauded last November.

Springfield junior Hunter Belzo (Middletown, CT) and Merchant Marine junior Joe Vitelli (Warrington, PA) were selected as the conference's offensive and special teams athlete of the week, respectively.

Football is back in action on October 20 with a trip to Kings Point, NY for a 1pm kickoff versus Merchant Marine.
