Westwood, MA --- WPI senior Spencer Herrington (Clearfield, PA) has been selected as the NEWMAC Football Special Teams Athlete of the Week and junior Nick Ostrowski (Charlton, MA) has been named as the NEWMAC Football Defensive Athlete of the Week for their efforts in Saturday's 13-6 win over previously unbeaten MIT. Herrington was once again lauded by Noontime Sports and Ostrowski was tabbed as the WPI Men's Student Athlete of the Week earlier in the day.
Herrington connected on two fourth-quarter field goals in adverse conditions one from 41 yards and one from 31 with less than six minutes left in the game. The senior outscored both teams as he drilled a PAT for a total of seven points on the day. He also boomed eight punts for 170 yards for an average of 21.3 with a long of 54 and two touchbacks, including one that narrowly missed going out at the 1 yard line. The 41-yard field goal ties his career best.
Ostrowski, meanwhile, tied for a team-high eight tackles (four solo, four assists) and forced two fumbles in Saturday's triumph. For his efforts, the junior was the Robert Pritchard Award defensive honoree on Homecoming.
It was Herrington's second nod of 2018 and the sixth of his career. Ostrowski, who joins Blayne Merchant as a 2018 defensive selection, collects his second in as many seasons. Norwich junior Aaron Conner was the league's offensive athlete of the week pick.
Football (5-3, 3-2) travels to Coast Guard (5-3, 3-2) Saturday for a noon NEWMAC kickoff.
