Westwood, MA --- WPI's Zack Ahrens (South Glens Falls, NY) and Bryce Wade (Modesto, CA) have been honored as the NEWMAC Football Defensive and Special Teams Athletes of the Week, respectively. Norwich QB Matt Dunn (Rockland, MA) was tabbed as the offensive athlete of the week.
Ahrens led all players with 13 tackles, including 10 unassisted, as the Engineers defeated rival RPI 6-3 in the 113th meeting of the two programs. After WPI kicked the go ahead field goal with 3:52 left, RPI drove down to the RPI 35 but on second down the senior linebacker recovered a fumble and secured the Transit Trophy's location in Worcester for the next year. As a team, Ahrens has anchored a defensive effort that has allowed just three points in two games.
Wade connected on two field goals, including the game winner from 26 yards out with 3:52 left, to lift WPI (2-0) to a 6-3 win over No. 19 RPI to capture the Transit Trophy for the first time since 2016. In addition to his season-best boot, the junior added a 25-yarder to get the Crimson and Gray on the board first with 4:24 left in the initial period. He also placed three of nine punts inside the 20 to go with a fair catch.
RPI had won the trophy the past two years and had reached the NCAA Quarterfinals last season.
Nick Ostrowski and Spencer Herrington were lauded the last time WPI hauled in defense and special teams accolades in the same week on October 29. 2018.
Football (2-0) travels to Husson to close out the non-conference portion of the schedule on Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 1pm.
