Westwood, MA --- WPI's Bryce Wade (Modesto, CA) and Julian Nyland (Melrose, MA) earned accolades from the NEWMAC as the conference announced its weekly award winners on Monday afternoon. Wade nabbed his fourth NEWMAC Football Special Teams Athlete of the Week award while Nyland garnered NEWMAC Football Offensive Co-Athlete of the Week honors.
Wade played a big role in WPI's 66-13 NEWMAC victory over Merchant Marine on Saturday afternoon. The junior converted on all nine PATs, connected on a career-long 39-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, and contributed a tackle to stop a long kickoff return to end the first half.
Nyland threw for a career-high 332 yards as the Engineers set a new school record for points in a game with 66. The senior did all of his damage in the first half, completing 14-of-18 passes, throwing for touchdowns of 59, 78 and 29 yards. Nyland got the scoring started with a 8-yard touchdown run. WPI amassed over 400 yards of first-half offense for third straight game.
The Engineers are the the top ranked team for the sixth straight week in the Grinold Chapter New England Division III Top 10 and receiving votes in both the D3football.com and AFCA Top 25s, are now 7-0 on the season and 4-0 in conference play. The 7-0 start is the second best in the program's 130-year history, only behind the 8-0 undefeated 1983 team.
Nyland shared the league's offensive award with Norwich's Matt Dunn while MIT's Sean Kent took home the defensive honor.
WPI heads to defending NEWMAC champion MIT for a noon contest next Saturday in Cambridge. The winner of that game will have the inside track to the conference's first automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.
