WORCESTER -- Abby O'Sullivan (Walpole, MA) netted a pair of goals and goalkeeper Karen Mushrall (Mariaville, ME) posted a shutout as WPI knocked visiting Lasell from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 2-0 victory in a non-conference field hockey contest played Tuesday evening. The Engineers, winners of three straight at home, are now 5-2 on the season, while Lasell drops to 8-1.
WPI got on the scoreboard early following a penalty corner when Kaitlyn Hess' (Milford, NH) hard shot from the left side towards the far post, tipped off O'Sullivan's stick and crossed the goal line just 5:06 into the contest.
The Lasers got their first serious scoring chance in the 27th minute but Cailin Flannery's (Medford, NJ) bid was repelled by Murshrall.
The Crimson and Gray got an important insurance tally midway through the second half when O'Sullivan knocked her own rebound out of midair into the back for the net for the freshman's fifth goal of the year at 52:57. Lasell had its best opportunity of the second stanza with 10 minutes remaining when it appeared Nikki Pignone (Ipswich, MA) had Mushrall fully extended on the ground but the junior's shot hit the post and stayed out.
Mushrall was credited with four saves while tallying her third shutout of 2017 and tenth career victory and fourth clean sheet of her career. Denise Landry (New Milford, CT) was strong in net for the Lasers with nine saves. On the night WPI held a 19-6 edge in shots and double the Lasers in penalty corners by a 10-5 margin.
Both teams return to conference action on Saturday. WPI hosts Springfield at 4pm and will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 1992 NCAA Tournament team. Lasell heads to cross-town rival Mount Ida for a noon tilt.
