Gilbert, AZ --- Led by seniors Sabrina Guzzi (Suffield, CT) and Izzy Garver (Owls Head, ME), 12 WPI student-athletes were recognized for academics by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). The team, meanwhile, was honored for the 14th consecutive year.
The duo earned their fourth NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad selection while Guzzi was also named as a repeat Scholar of Distinction. They were joined by classmate Amanda Richards (Wilmington, MA) with her third nod. Zoe Schwartz (Smithfield, RI) paced the junior class with a third honor while Karen Mushrall (Mariaville, ME) collected her second. Sophomores Hannah Larochelle (New Boston, NH) and Suzy Opalka (Harvard, MA) were a perfect 2-for-2 as Carly Cidado (Easton, MA) and Emily Wilson (Malvern, PA) were named for the first time. Rookie honorees included Emma Bennett (Hampstead, NH), Abby O'Sullivan (Walpole, MA) and Julia Vanderstreet (West Bridgewater, MA). Bennett was also named a Scholar of Distinction.
The Division III Scholars of Distinction program recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher through the first semester of the 2017-18 academic year while the National Academic Squad program recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2017-18 academic year. The Division III National Academic Team Award, meanwhile, recognizes those programs that earned a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the Fall Semester of the 2017-18 academic year.
