Cambridge, MA -- Goalkeeper Karen Mushrall (Mariaville, ME) collected a season-high with 10 saves and sophomore back Lindsey Giorgi (Barre, MA) assisted on multiple goals for her first two career points as WPI defeated MIT 4-0 in an important NEWMAC field hockey contest on Saturday.
The victory was the first for Worcester's Engineers over their rival from Cambridge since a 2-1 overtime victory on Homecoming on September 29th, 2009. The streak was nine games, including a NEWMAC Tournament Quarterfinal contest in 2014. WPI, winners of three straight, improves to 10-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play while MIT, which was just outside the NFHCA Top 20, dips to 8-5 on the season and 3-2 against NEWMAC foes.
Angie Ferro (Northboro, MA) got the guests on the scoreboard early when she took a feed from Bridget Sullivan (Wilmington, MA) off a penalty corner and belted home her fifth goal of her rookie campaign at 6:24. The goal was the only marker in the first half but WPI came out of the locker room and almost immediately doubled its advantage when Abby O'Sullivan (Walpole, MA) emerged from a scramble and knocked home a pass from Giorgi just a minute and a half into the second stanza.
MIT then had a pair of scoring chances denied by Mushrall before Giorgi found Sullivan, who beat the MIT netminder who was on the ground to make it 3-0 at 44:20. Mushrall then made her finest stop of the day when she made a diving save on Bailey Tregoning's (Frederick, MD) bid with 18:20 remaining in the contest. WPI then closed out the scoring when O'Sullivan took a great pass from Shannon Hynes (Auburn, MA) and delivered her team-best 17th goal of the season at 58.25.
Mushrall was impressive in between the pipes for the Crimson and Gray. The senior made five stops in each half en route to her seventh career shutout and third clean sheet of the season. Sweper Jackie Cardin (Manchester, NH) helped preserve the shutout with a defensive save in the waning seconds of the first half. Grace Moore (Boston, MA) registered three saves for the hosts, while working the first 62:26 in net and Emma Majercak (Wayne, MA) aided the MIT effort with a defensive save.
MIT outshot its guests 14-10 and held a slight edge in penalty corners 7-6.
WPI closes out a two-game road trip Tuesday with a 6pm NEWMAC contest at Smith. MIT is back in action the same day, heading to Wellesley for a 4pm start.
