Nationally-Ranked Babson Tangos Past Upset-Minded Field Hockey

WORCESTER – Senior Ashley Tango (Reading, MA) notched a pair of goals and an assist to lead No. 12 Babson past host WPI, 4-1, in a Saturday afternoon NEWMAC Field Hockey matchup in Alumni Stadium.

The Beavers, who are also the top team in the NCAA Division III New England East Regional Rankings, improves to 14-3 overall and 8-0 in conference action while WPI, the third team in the same rankings, slips to 10-4 and 4-3.

WPI freshman Angie Ferro (Northboro, MA), who led the team with three shots on-goal, made an early statement for the home team just 40 seconds into the contest. Tango leveled the game exactly 18 minutes later with a rip from the left side. Sophomore Maddy Paro (Manchester, CT) put the guests ahead for good with 47 seconds left in the first half.

Babson added another at 38:25 as Tango knocked home an insertion by junior Carla DiBiase (Winchester, MA). Junior Tori Roche (Andover, MA) then tipped in a shot by Tango for the 4-1 lead at 58:28.

Freshman Cassidy Riley (Cantonsville, MD) stopped six of the Engineers shots on-goal as WPI senior Karen Mushrall (Mariaville, ME) halted four, and sophomore Jackie Cardin (Manchester, NH) pitched in with a pair of defensive save. Junior Carly Cidado (Easton, MA) also had multiple shots on-goal for the Crimson and Gray.

Babson owned a 17-9 margin in shots and a 11-4 difference in penalty corners.

WPI is back in Alumni Stadium for Senior Night Tuesday at 7pm. The Beavers host Skidmore Wednesday at 5pm.
