Dudley, MA --- Abby O'Sullivan (Walpole, MA) netted a pair of goals and an assist and goalkeeper Ali Gannon (Fremont, NH) notched her first career victory as the WPI field hockey team opened the 2019 season by blanking host Nichols 3-0 on Friday evening.
The Crimson and Gray opened the scoring late in the first quarter following a penalty corner. Holly Mason's (Plymouth, NH) shot was saved but Carly Cidado (Easton, MA) collected the rebound on the right side and sent a nifty pass towards the middle that was blasted home by Abby O'Sullivan (Walpole, MA) at 13:05.
O'Sullivan struck again when took a feed by Hannah Larochelle (New Boston, NH) and batted it home just 1:33 before halftime. It was the first-ever second quarter goal in WPI field hockey history as the sport has shifted to the international four quarter format for 2019.
O'Sullivan, who finished second in the NEWMAC in 2018 in goals, now has 33 career markers, just one game into her third campaign.
Gannon made four stops in net on her way to a shutout in the sophomore's first career start. She was aided by the defensive quartet of Hynes, Larochelle, Jackie Cardin (Manchester, NH) and Lindsey Giorgi (Barre, MA).
Mackenzie McDonald (Pembroke, MA) aided the Bison defensive effort with a pair of defensive saves. Goalkeeper Brooke Misbach (Guildford, CT) totaled sevens stops on the night while Mackenzie Doran (Wolfeboro, NH) accounted for half (four) of the hosts shots in the game.
On the night WPI enjoyed a 18-8 edge in shots and an 9-4 bulge in penalty corners.
Both teams are back in action at 7pm on Tuesday in Worcester. WPI (1-0) hosts Bridgewater State in its home opener while Nichols (0-1) heads to Clark.
